Chapter 15 - Everything I LostBennett Coastal survived.

But I did not return as chief executive.

The board sold divisions.

Employees were compensated.

The stolen pension funds were restored.

I surrendered most of my shares.

My properties.

My investments.

My name appeared in newspapers beside words like scandal and collapse.

I no longer cared.

I had once believed wealth was protection.

Now I knew wealth could also become camouflage.

I kept one ordinary house.

An old truck.

A bedroom for Sophie.

A guest room for Olivia.

And enough money to live without pretending.

One evening, Olivia found me signing the final restitution papers.

“You may lose everything.”

I looked toward Sophie, who was drawing at the kitchen table.

“I already know what everything is.”

Olivia followed my gaze.

A quiet smile appeared.

“What is it?”

I answered:

“Her.”

Olivia shook her head.

“Not just her.”

I looked at her.

She nodded.

“Family.”

The word felt different now.

Not possession.

Not blood.

Not money.

May you like

A choice.

Every day.
