Chapter 19 - Everybody Came HomeSophie called from upstairs.

“Daddy!”

“I’m coming.”

I found her beneath a yellow blanket.

Olivia's photograph rested on her nightstand.

But it was no longer the only photograph.

There were new ones.

Olivia teaching her to ride a bicycle.

Olivia cutting her birthday cake.

Sophie asleep against Olivia's shoulder.

The three of us beneath the magnolia tree.

A family not restored to what it had been.

A family rebuilt into something new.

“Read the girl who finds her way home,” Sophie said.

I opened the book.

Halfway through, she interrupted.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Why didn't the girl give up?”

I looked at the illustration.

A little girl walked through a dark forest toward a distant light.

“Because she knew someone was waiting for her.”

Sophie smiled.

“Mommy knew we were waiting.”

“Yes.”

She rested her head against my arm.

The house was quiet.

The doors were open.

The night was gentle.

And somewhere beyond the windows, the Pacific rolled against the Malibu shore.

I thought about the first night.

The scream.

The bruises.

The little garden door.

The woman who returned from the dead.

The lies.

The courtroom.

The fire.

The arrests.

The empty grave.

Everything had started with four words.

You hurt me every day.

For months, I wished I had heard them sooner.

Therapy taught me something different.

The past could explain us.

It could warn us.

It could demand justice.

But it could not be the only place we lived.

Sophie fell asleep.

I closed the book.

Before leaving, I checked her closet.

No hidden food.

No locked door.

No frightened child waiting for footsteps.

Only toys.

Clothes.

And a drawing taped to the wall.

Three people stood outside a wooden house.

Above them was a bright yellow sun.

Beneath it, Sophie had written in uneven letters:

EVERYBODY CAME HOME.

I stood there for a long moment.

May you like

Then I turned off the lamp.

I left the door open.
