Chapter 16 - The Magnolia TreeOne year after the trial, we returned to the cemetery.

Olivia's old grave stood beneath a fading stone.

The grave had always represented a lie.

A dead woman who wasn't dead.

A family mourning someone who was still alive.

We removed the stone.

The empty coffin remained underground.

In its place, we planted a magnolia tree.

Olivia stood quietly.

She had never forgiven Celeste.

She didn't have to.

Forgiveness was not a debt owed to the dead.

But Olivia had learned to grieve.

Not only for her mother.

For the childhood she never had.

For the years stolen from her.

For the version of herself who had believed she was forgotten.

Sophie placed two strawberry candies beneath the tree.

“One for Grandma.”

Then another.

“One for the mommy who came back.”

Olivia crouched.

“I'm right here.”

“I know.”

Sophie hugged her.

“That’s why you get two.”

Olivia closed her eyes.

For the first time, she cried without trying to hide it.

I stood beside them.

The ocean moved beyond the cemetery wall.

The afternoon sun turned the water gold.

And for once, the past did not feel like a prison.

It felt like a grave we had finally stopped living inside.
