Chapter 12 - DELPHINE'S DEAL Delphine's case moved forward.

The slap was simple.

The larger financial scheme was harder.

Some payments were legitimate.

Others were not.

False descriptions.

Family-office expenses.

Governance manipulation.

Delphine offered cooperation.

She wanted consideration.

But I refused to meet her.

Instead, she sent a written statement.

She admitted something I had never considered.

She had always felt that my father preferred me.

After Lila died, Mother focused heavily on me.

Delphine felt useful only when she helped Mother manage me.

Then Crestline offered her a formal role.

Money.

Status.

Purpose.

Mother made her feel important.

Delphine accepted.

That didn't excuse anything.

It explained it.

Then she wrote:

I told myself Willa was spoiled and would recover from a few harsh dinners.

That sentence made me sick.

She had convinced herself cruelty was harmless because the child was young.

Then came the line:

I didn't plan to slap her until I did it.

No excuse.

But accountability.

Then something unexpected happened.

Delphine offered to pay the remaining uncovered therapy expenses for Willa.

I accepted through counsel.

Not as forgiveness.

As restitution.

She also gave investigators a handwritten notebook.

Pages of triggers.

Lila.

Travel.

Food.

Willa.

My arrival times.

The notebook made everything painfully human.

They hadn't planned one terrible evening.

They had built a pattern.

And I had been walking into it without knowing.

Then Willa asked:

“Why do you walk when mad?”

“Because it helps me not do dumb things.”

“Pasta?”

“Yes.”

She laughed.

That became our private joke.

The most important joke in the family.
