Chapter 3 - THE PAYMENTS Police obtained Delphine's financial records.

Eleven transfers.
Total:
$31,500.
The payments were not all for violence.
That distinction mattered.
Some were legitimate family support.
Some were household assistance.
Some were consulting payments.
But several aligned with incidents involving Willa.
The handwritten sheet became more disturbing once investigators compared it with the digital spreadsheet recovered from my mother's laptop.
Columns appeared:
Date.
Everett ETA.
Willa placement.
Delphine task.
Expected response.
Media.
Payment.
I stared at the screen.
Some entries were almost harmless.
“Seat Willa away from Everett.”
“Question Willa about school.”
Then they became darker.
“Mention Lila's parenting.”
“Challenge Everett's travel.”
“Tell Everett Willa acts worse after he leaves.”
Then:
“Ensure witnesses.”
And finally:
Dinner — physical correction if defiant.
Payment:
$4,000.
That payment had been transferred to Delphine at 9:41 p.m.
After police arrived.
After Willa's cheek had swollen.
After my mother knew exactly what had happened.
Detective Ellis looked at me.
“That is significant.”
“What crime is this?”
“That's for prosecutors.”
I hated the answer.
I wanted certainty.
I wanted handcuffs.
I wanted someone to tell me my family had become monsters.
Instead, Ellis gave me something harder.
Facts.
Not rage.
Facts.
Then security footage arrived.
The dining room camera showed everything.
Delphine slapping Willa.
Willa falling.
Me picking her up.
Willa pointing toward my mother.
Me throwing the pasta bowl.
My mother threatening to cut me off from family money.
Willa producing the paper.
Then earlier footage.
November.
Delphine standing beside Willa's broken doll.
“Your daddy bought that because Mommy isn't here to make you behave.”
Willa was crying.
My mother stood near the window.
She looked at the security monitor.
Then:
“He's two minutes away.”
Delphine smiled.
“Good.”
My car appeared on the driveway.
And Delphine's voice became louder.
Another clip.
January.
Willa refused to eat mushrooms.
Delphine removed her plate.
My mother watched the security monitor.
My car appeared on the gate camera.
Then Delphine said:
“Maybe your father will finally teach you gratitude.”
The clip Mother submitted against me began three seconds later.
Selective documentation.
Then another text appeared.
From my mother.
He lands at 6:42. Dinner at 7:30.
Delphine:
What do you want me to do?
Mother:
Same as before. Push until he shows himself.
Then:
And Willa?
Mother:
She's the easiest way to get him emotional.
I stopped reading.
Jonah Reed, my attorney, took the phone from my hand.
“Enough.”
“They used her.”
“Yes.”
I walked outside.
Cold air hit my face.
My hands were shaking.
Willa wasn't the target because she had money.
May you like
She was the lever because I loved her.
And somehow, that felt worse.
