Chapter 8 - I GAVE THEM A NEW VIDEOI made another mistake.

I went to the family office alone.
Mother was waiting.
“You brought police into this family.”
“I brought police to a child assault.”
“You threw a bowl at your sister.”
“I know.”
“You always know after.”
I felt the trap closing.
She was provoking me again.
And I knew it.
But I stayed.
She stepped closer.
“Willa was never in danger until you started making scenes.”
I slammed my palm onto the conference table.
The water carafe jumped.
Silence.
Then I saw it.
The red recording light.
Camera.
Again.
Mother smiled.
“You see?”
I hated that smile.
But I hated myself more.
Because I had given her another clip.
Jonah arrived moments later.
“What happened?”
“I hit the table.”
“Why?”
“She called Willa manipulative.”
He closed his eyes.
“Everett, they don't need to fake everything if you keep providing it.”
That sentence destroyed me.
Because it was true.
Mother's scheme was real.
But so were my reactions.
I couldn't erase one with the other.
The company added the video to the conduct review.
No child was present.
No threat was made.
Still, it showed aggression.
Miles extended my recusal.
I accepted it.
That evening, I told Willa:
“I got angry today.”
She waited.
“I hit a table.”
“Did table hurt?”
“No.”
“Did Grandma?”
“No.”
“Then why tell me?”
“Because I'm learning what to do when I'm angry.”
She thought for a moment.
“Walk away.”
“Yes.”
“You didn't.”
“No.”
“Next time.”
I smiled.
“Next time.”
That night, I called an anger counselor.
Not because Mother had demanded it.
Because I needed it.
May you like
My anger belonged to me.
Even if someone had tried to weaponize it.
