Chapter 7 - THE FIRST VALUATION The independent valuation came back.

Crestline's original offer was low.
Not disastrously low.
But low.
Updated range:
$106 million to $116 million.
Crestline could improve.
And they did.
But the side deals were another story.
My mother's proposed compensation was far above what independent advisers considered reasonable.
Delphine's $1.15 million agreement had almost no operational justification.
That mattered.
The company itself might be worth selling.
The family's private arrangements were the problem.
Then Aunt Cecily came forward.
She admitted Mother sometimes texted:
Everett is coming. Stay close.
Another message:
If Everett loses his temper tonight, don't intervene too quickly.
Cecily had thought it meant keeping peace.
Now she understood.
Cousin Mark produced another message.
Mother had asked him whether he had video from one of the dinners.
The pattern was spreading.
Then Delphine texted me.
One sentence:
I was supposed to make you angry, not hurt her like that.
I stared at the screen.
Jonah said:
“Don't answer.”
I didn't.
That was becoming my new form of strength.
Silence.
Then investigators discovered a second document.
A memo from family counsel titled:
Contingency if Everett Escalates.
It had been written two weeks before the dinner.
The memo itself was legitimate.
Family governance rules allowed temporary recusal if a steward became a material governance risk.
But Mother's timing changed everything.
She had asked:
“What if Everett has another outburst before the vote?”
The attorney had answered:
“If independently documented, conduct review could justify temporary recusal.”
Mother hadn't invented the governance rule.
She had learned how to weaponize it.
Then the full presentation appeared.
PATH TO CLEAN VOTE.
The central secret was no longer hidden.
Mother had created a system designed to make me look unstable.
And Willa had been the easiest trigger.

The only question left was how far Mother had actually gone.
The answer would come in a room where she could no longer control the story.
