Chapter 22 - THE FIRST LETTER FROM GRANDMA Mother's apology letter took four drafts.

The first blamed fear.
The second blamed love.
The third asked Willa to forgive her.
Dr. Chen rejected all three.
Finally, Mother wrote:
Willa,
I told Delphine when your dad was coming home because I wanted to make him angry for a business reason. I used you to do that. That was wrong.
I also let Delphine treat you badly and paid her after she slapped you.
You did not cause any of it.
You are not embarrassing.
You do not have to see me.
You do not have to forgive me.
Grandma.
Dr. Chen asked Willa:
“Do you want to hear it?”
“Not today.”
A week later:
“Yes.”
Dr. Chen read it.
Willa listened quietly.
When she heard:
You are not embarrassing.
Her eyes filled.
“Grandma knows?”
“Knows what?”
“That I'm not?”
“Yes.”
Willa thought for a moment.
Then she dictated her own sentence.
I DON'T LIKE WHEN PEOPLE KNOW DADDY CAR.
We sent it.
Mother replied:
“I won't track when your dad comes home anymore.”
No explanation.
No defense.
Just a promise.
And we backed that promise with systems.
Mother lost access to:
The gate app.
The family calendar.
School information.
Travel notifications.
Company systems.
She couldn't simply promise not to track us.
She couldn't track us.
That difference mattered.
Then Willa asked:
“Who knows Daddy car?”
“Me.”
“School?”
“They know when they need to.”
“Camera?”
“Security knows.”
She nodded.

The world was becoming predictable again.
And predictable was safe.
