Chapter 24 - MOTHER SEES WILLA The first in-person visit happened eleven weeks after the slap.

Therapy office.

Fifteen minutes.

Willa chose the length.

Mother entered.

No gifts.

No demands.

She stopped six feet away.

“Hi, Willa.”

“Hi.”

“Can I sit?”

Willa looked at Dr. Chen.

Then me.

Then nodded.

Mother sat.

Willa held her stuffed fox.

Mother looked at it.

“I remember that.”

Willa tightened her grip.

Mother stopped talking.

Good.

Then Willa asked the question no adult wanted to answer.

“Why did you pay Delphine?”

Mother took a breath.

“Because I wanted her to make your dad angry so he would lose a job role.”

“Why me?”

“Because I knew your dad loved you and would get angry when someone was mean to you.”

Willa looked at me.

“He chose pasta.”

Mother's mouth twitched.

“Yes.”

Willa looked back.

“Did you want the slap?”

“No.”

“Did you pay after?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Mother was silent for several seconds.

“Because I cared more about the plan than stopping and admitting I had done something terrible.”

Willa leaned against me.

“Bad.”

Mother nodded.

“Yes.”

At the end, Mother asked:

“Can I see your drawing?”

Willa showed her.

No hug.

No forgiveness.

Just a drawing.

Later Willa asked:

“Grandma sad?”

“Yes.”

“Do I fix?”

“No.”

That was one of the most important lessons of all.

A child does not repair an adult.

Then the company transition continued.

Some headquarters jobs disappeared.

Frontline employees were largely retained.

The business didn't collapse.

It simply changed owners.

At another visit, Mother asked:

“May I hug you?”

Willa said:

“No.”

Mother nodded.

“Okay.”

May you like

That word meant more than tears.

Because for the first time, Mother accepted a boundary she couldn't control.
