Chapter 1 - The Bride Confronts Her Mother-in-LawThe shock of the shove still echoed through the marble foyer.

The mother-in-law’s red satin dress swayed violently from the force of the movement, while the bride slowly pushed herself up from the floor, which was covered in shattered glass. Every crunch beneath the soles of her shoes was a reminder of the line that had just been crossed.

She adjusted the torn fabric around her waist, her eyes locked on the woman who had orchestrated her fall, ignoring the hot blood beginning to run down her left wrist.

“You think a piece of broken glass is going to stop me, Helena?”

The bride’s voice sliced through the heavy silence of the hall like a cold blade.

Helena instinctively took a step backward, but within a fraction of a second, she regained her arrogant composure.

“You never belonged in this family, Sofia. This marriage was a fraud from the moment you signed that modified prenuptial agreement. Did you really think my son would stay with a woman whose father is in prison for defrauding our group?”

The groom froze.

His eyes shifted from Helena to Sofia, confusion written across his furrowed brow.

“What is she talking about, Sofia? Your father... the holding company loan agreement... was it true?”

Sofia stared at her fiancé, slowly unclenching the fist that had been hiding a small fragment of a burned document she had recovered from the library only minutes earlier.

She did not answer with words.

Instead, she took two quick steps toward Helena.

The shards of glass beneath her feet cracked loudly.

“Ask her who put my father’s signature on that bank transfer, Leonardo,” Sofia said, never taking her eyes off her mother-in-law. “Ask her why the offshore account in Zurich is registered under the name of the mother of the little girl who just pointed at her.”

A maid stifled a gasp and pulled the child behind a marble column.

Helena’s face went pale, and her hands trembled subtly beneath the folds of her red satin dress.

“You insolent liar! You’re trying to save your own family by destroying mine!”

“Enough!”

Leonardo stepped forward, his voice echoing beneath the mansion’s golden vaulted ceilings.

He grabbed his mother’s arm with a force he had never used before, his knuckles turning white.

“The Zurich account... was that the key you asked me for last week? The password that was inside my father’s safe?”

Helena tried to pull her arm free, but her son’s grip held firm.

“Leonardo, you’re going to believe some girl who wasn’t even using her real name when she entered this house? She’s a fraud!”

Sofia let out a short, humorless laugh.

She walked toward the center of the hall and stopped exactly where the diamond ring had bounced across the floor.

Without bending down to pick it up, she stepped on the jewelry, driving the heel of her shoe into the stone until she heard the muffled sound of the metal giving way.

“My birth name doesn’t matter, Helena,” Sofia whispered, moving closer until she was only inches from her mother-in-law’s face. “What matters is that the DNA evidence the forensic team just collected from the wineglass in the library will prove who was in that room on the day Leonardo’s father supposedly ‘died of a heart attack.’”

A deathly silence fell over the room.

The housekeeper lowered her head, hiding her tears, while the little girl in the pink dress raised her tiny hand and pointed toward the corner of the room again.

“The lady in red put the medicine there,” the child murmured with the terrifying clarity only a child could possess. “I saw her from my hiding place under the stairs.”

Helena stumbled two quick steps backward, nearly tripping over her own dress.

“That child is confused! Someone told her to say that!”

“She’s not confused,” Leonardo said, finally realizing the devastating truth.

He looked at his mother as though he were standing before a complete stranger.

“The autopsy report you ordered sealed... you weren’t covering up the hospital’s negligence.”

His voice broke.

“You were covering yourself.”

The distant sound of sirens began to penetrate the mansion’s thick walls.

Heavy footsteps echoed closer along the main driveway.

Helena looked up at the ceiling, her eyes locking onto the security camera that had recorded every second—the shove, the shattered glass, and the confession she had practically made without realizing it.

Her arrogance collapsed into absolute terror.

She reached for her son’s hand one last time.

But Leonardo stepped backward, leaving her standing alone in the center of the blood-stained marble floor.

Sofia turned her back on them with a fluid motion, the torn train of her wedding dress sweeping the shards of glass aside as she walked.

She took her first step toward the mansion’s massive double entrance doors.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Helena screamed, her shrill voice cracking with desperation. “You have nowhere to go! Your father is in prison, and your reputation is ruined!”

Sofia stopped in the doorway.

The cold night wind caught her partially destroyed veil, making it flutter behind her.

She glanced over her shoulder, a dark smile cutting across her face, still marked with dust from the shattered glass.

“My father was never in that prison, Helena,” Sofia said, calmly adjusting the watch on her injured wrist.
