Sofia and Leonardo returned to the mansion under police protection.
Every room felt different now.
The portraits on the walls no longer looked like family history.
They looked like evidence.
They searched the grandfather's study.
Behind a clock, they found a hidden safe.
Inside was a single envelope.
Sofia opened it.
A photograph fell out.
It showed Helena meeting a politician.
Another showed Victor meeting a judge.
Then another.
Bankers.
Police officials.
Business leaders.
The corruption was enormous.
But the ledger wasn't there.
Leonardo noticed a message engraved inside the safe.
The truth is buried where the family prays.
“The chapel,” Sofia said.
They returned.
But someone had already beaten them there.
The floor had been destroyed.
The hidden compartment was empty.
Leonardo clenched his fists.
“Victor.”
A phone rang.
Sofia answered.
No one spoke.
Then a voice whispered:
“You want the ledger?”
Sofia froze.
“Who is this?”
“You have twenty-four hours.”
“What do you want?”
“Leonardo.”
She looked at him.
The voice continued.
“Bring him to the old railway station.”
The call ended.
Leonardo shook his head.
“It's a trap.”
“I know.”
“Then we're not going.”
