Chapter 13 - The WitnessThe witness was a former banker named Thomas Reed.
He had disappeared ten years earlier.
Sofia found him living under protection in Montana.
He revealed that Helena had ordered the original transfers.
But the murder had been ordered by someone else.
“The person who paid Helena wasn't your grandfather.”
“Who was it?”
Thomas hesitated.
Then gave her a name.
Sofia recognized it.
The judge.
The same judge who controlled the family trust.
The same man who had signed the warrant that imprisoned Sofia's father.
Leonardo was furious.
“He destroyed my father.”
Thomas nodded.
“And he destroyed dozens of others.”
But Thomas had one more revelation.
“The judge has a son.”
“Who?”
“Victor Kane.”
Silence.
Victor wasn't merely the family's lawyer.
He was the judge's son.
And Helena had been his partner.
The conspiracy had been running for decades.
Before they could leave, gunshots shattered the windows.
Thomas fell.
Sofia screamed.
Leonardo pulled her behind the wall.
The assassin fled.
Thomas was injured but alive.
With his final strength, he whispered:
“Your father hid the last evidence…”
“Where?”
Thomas looked at Sofia.
“Inside the wedding ring.”
Sofia froze.
Her wedding ring.
The ring Helena had given her.
She removed it.
