Chapter 10 - Judgment on the Tarmac

Rain poured down relentlessly, washing away the blood and grit on the concrete. Julian writhed on the wet ground, clutching his bleeding face, while Victoria lay on her knees, her red gown ruined, weeping hysterically in total defeat. Nolan Sterling stood alone near the edge of the helipad, his silver cane snapped in two, his snow-white hair plastered to his forehead as he stared down the barrel of Ethan’s gun.
"Do it," Nolan spat, his chest heaving as he stepped closer to the roof's edge, thirty stories above the asphalt below. "Finish what your father couldn't. Kill me!"
Ethan slowly lowered his weapon. His face was cold, serene, and utterly detached from the old man's madness. "No," Ethan said softly. "Death is too clean for you, Nolan. You’re going to spend whatever years you have left inside a concrete cell, watching Clara rebuild everything you tried to destroy."
Marcus stepped forward with three federal agents who had reached the roof, immediately forcing Nolan to the ground and ratcheting heavy steel cuffs around his wrists. Julian was hauled to his feet, crying like a coward, while Victoria was lifted off the ground, her eyes hollow, vacant, and completely shattered.
As the officers dragged Victoria past Clara, the former maid stood tall, her posture regal and calm. Victoria paused, her voice a weak, cracked whisper. "You... you were nothing... you were just a servant..."
Clara looked Victoria dead in the eyes, her voice smooth and cold as steel. "I was never your servant, Victoria. I was your reckoning."
Victoria flinched as if struck, collapsing into the arms of the agents who dragged her away into the dark stairwell.
Ethan turned to Clara. The rain was streaming down both of their faces, but the darkness that had hovered over them for months was finally gone. He stepped close to her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her body tight against his. Clara wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder as a deep, shuddering sigh escaped her chest.

"It’s over," she whispered against his neck.
"No," Ethan smiled softly, lifting her chin to press his lips against hers in a long, desperate, passionate kiss that defied the rain and the cold. "It’s just beginning."
