Chapter 16 - The Fallen Fortress

The sun broke over the Thames the following morning, burning away the heavy London fog and bathing the city in a brilliant golden light. The Citadel—once the feared, untouchable fortress of the global Syndicate—was now surrounded by dozens of international law enforcement vehicles, emergency evidence vans, and swarms of global news crews.
Standing on the riverbank, wrapped in a warm wool blanket provided by emergency services, Clara watched as Charles Vance, Nolan Sterling, and dozens of high-ranking corporate conspirators were led away in chains to awaiting armored transport vans.
Ethan walked up behind her, two warm cups of coffee in his hands. He handed one to her, wrapping his free arm around her shoulders to draw her tight against his side.
"Interpol just confirmed," Ethan said gently, taking a sip of coffee. "The entire Syndicate network has collapsed. The leaked files from Vault 13 have triggered arrests in eleven countries. Over four hundred shell companies have been seized."
Clara leaned her head against his shoulder, looking out at the glittering water. "It feels surreal. For so long, I thought I was just surviving... waiting for the next blow to fall."
"You did more than survive, Clara," Ethan whispered, turning her in his arms so he could look into her eyes. "You brought down a monster, saved my life, and rebuilt two broken legacies from the ash."
A black town car pulled up on the embankment. Marcus stepped out from the driver’s seat, holding open the rear door. Inside sat little Chloe, holding her stuffed rabbit, her face lighting up with a radiant smile the moment she saw them.
"Daddy! Clara!" Chloe squealed, scrambling out of the car and throwing herself into their arms.
Ethan scooped his daughter up into a huge hug, while Clara wrapped her arms around both of them, kissing Chloe’s forehead.

"Are we going home now?" Chloe asked, her big brown eyes shining with hope.
Ethan looked at Clara, a deep, radiant warmth filling his chest—a warmth he hadn't felt since he was a child. "Yes, baby," Ethan smiled softly. "We’re finally going home."
