Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Financial Tower was packed with hundreds of the world's most powerful bankers, hedge fund managers, and media magnates. Crystal chandeliers cast a dazzling light over white-linen tables topped with expensive champagne and floral arrangements. At the central dais stood Julian Vance, impeccably tailored, smiling like a triumphant king about to receive his crown. Standing beside him was Victoria, wearing a blood-red designer gown and diamonds that sparkled under the harsh television lights.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian announced into the podium microphone, his voice smooth as silk. "Today marks the dawn of a new era. With the SEC's emergency ruling and the total freezing of Ethan Vance’s compromised assets, Vance-Sterling Global transitions into stronger, more responsible hands."
Applause rippled through the elite audience. Photographers’ cameras flashed in rapid succession. Victoria leaned into the microphone, a cruel, triumphant smirk playing on her lips. "Ethan Vance was a deeply disturbed man who abused his authority, betrayed his family, and embezzled billions. Today, justice is served—"
"Justice?"
A sharp, booming voice echoed through the high-grade sound system, overriding the podium microphone entirely.
The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open with violent force. Ethan Vance walked down the central aisle. He was dressed in a pristine charcoal suit, his face cold, calm, and utterly dominant. Walking right beside him, hand in hand, was Clara. She wore an elegant black silk dress, her head held high, radiating an undeniable aura of power that silenced the entire room. Behind them walked two dozen uniformed federal agents, led by the Assistant Director of the FBI.
Panicked whispers tore through the crowd like wildfire. Victoria stepped back, her mouth agape, her face draining of all color. "No... no! Shoot him! Security, shoot him!"
"Stand down!" the FBI Assistant Director barked, his voice echoing across the silent room as his agents drew their weapons, surrounding Julian’s private bodyguards, who immediately raised their hands in surrender.
Ethan stopped ten feet from the stage, looking up at Julian and Victoria with absolute contempt. "Did you really think your rigged SEC order would hold up once the actual federal authorities saw the unredacted ledgers?"
Julian’s cool demeanor cracked, his eyes darting frantically toward the side exits. "This is an illegal intrusion! I am the court-appointed receiver—"

"You are a fraud, Julian," Clara spoke up, her clear, powerful voice carrying across the silent ballroom without the need for a microphone. She stepped forward, pulling a crimson leather folder from her portfolio. "And you are standing on land owned fifty-one percent by Arthur Sterling’s legitimate heir."
She turned to face the media cameras flashing madly around them. "I am Clara Sterling. And as of eight o'clock this morning, the federal court of international trade has verified my DNA, restored my father's stolen estate, and issued an emergency freeze on every asset, bank account, and shell company registered under Julian Vance and Victoria Sterling!"
