Chapter 17 - Ashes of the Past

One month later.

The old Vance-Sterling estate, once a dark palace of fear and emotional abuse under Victoria’s tyranny, was undergoing a total transformation. Construction crews were tearing down the cold marble walls, replacing them with warm oak finishings, bright open glass skylights, and expansive gardens overflowing with white roses.

In the master study, Ethan was finalizing the legal dissolution of the old corporate conglomerate. In its place stood Sterling-Vance International—a reborn ethical investment firm dedicated to green energy, social housing, and child advocacy programs.

Marcus entered the study, placing a single manila folder on the desk. "Final report from the federal prosecutor's office in New York, Ethan."

Ethan looked up from his tablet. "How did the sentencings go?"

"Victoria received thirty years without parole for fraud, embezzlement, and attempted murder," Marcus replied flatly. "Julian Vance got life in a maximum-security facility. Charles Vance and Nolan Sterling will spend the rest of their natural lives in a federal medical prison."

Ethan closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. The dark chapter that had plagued his childhood, destroyed his father, and threatened his daughter was permanently closed.

"Thank you, Marcus," Ethan said genuinely, standing up to extend his hand. "For everything. You kept my family alive when the whole world was against us."

Marcus shook Ethan’s hand with a rare, genuine smile. "It was an honor, boss. But if you’ll excuse me, I have a new security detail to train for the estate."

After Marcus left, Ethan walked down the long, sunlit hallway toward the conservatory. The sound of happy laughter echoed from the garden outside.

Through the glass doors, Ethan saw Clara sitting on a bench in the rose garden. Chloe was running around her in circles, laughing hysterically as she chased butterflies. Clara’s long hair was blowing gently in the spring breeze, her cheeks flushed with health and happiness.

Ethan stepped out into the warm sunshine, his heart swelling with a profound sense of peace. He walked across the green lawn, stopping behind the bench to wrap his arms around Clara, pulling her back against his chest.

Clara smiled, reaching up to cover his hands with hers. "What are you thinking about?" she asked softly.

"I'm thinking about the day those pearls broke on the living room floor," Ethan whispered in her ear, his breath warm against her neck. "I thought my life was ending that day. I had no idea it was actually the day my life began."
