Chapter 18 - The Rose Garden

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant shades of magenta, amber, and deep violet. Chloe, exhausted from a long day of playing in the sun, had fallen asleep in her bedroom upstairs, guarded by the peaceful night atmosphere of the restored estate.

Downstairs, soft classical music played through the house. The oppressive silence that had once filled the penthouse was completely gone, replaced by the warm, living breath of a real home.

Ethan stood on the open veranda, looking out over the illuminated gardens. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, holding two glasses of red wine. Clara stepped out to join him, wearing a simple, breathtaking white silk dress that caught the gentle evening breeze.

"Chloe is fast asleep," Clara said with a quiet smile, taking one of the wine glasses from his hand. "She asked if we could plant a vegetable garden near the fountain tomorrow."

"Whatever she wants," Ethan smiled, stepping closer to her. "Whatever you want."

Clara looked at him, her eyes searching his handsome face in the moonlight. "I already have everything I ever wanted, Ethan. A home where I am safe. A family to love. A life where I don't have to hide who I am."

Ethan set his glass down on the stone balustrade. He reached out, taking her glass and setting it down beside his, before taking both of her hands in his own. His heart was beating with a heavy, steady rhythm that resonated deep within his chest.

"Clara," Ethan began, his voice dropping into a tender, passionate baritone. "When you first came to this house, you were quiet, guarded, and hurt. But despite everything Victoria threw at you, you protected my daughter with your life. You brought light back into a house that had been cold and dark for years."

Clara felt a lump form in her throat, tears of pure joy glistening in her eyes.

"You proved to me that real strength doesn't come from money or corporate power," Ethan continued, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet box. "Real strength comes from love, courage, and truth. You saved my soul, Clara Sterling."

He dropped down onto one knee on the smooth stone of the veranda. He opened the velvet box to reveal a magnificent, glowing ring—a flawless canary diamond surrounded by a halo of shattered white pearl accents, symbolizing the rebirth of their lives from the ruins of the past.

"Clara... will you marry me? Will you make this family complete forever?"

Clara covered her mouth, a joy-filled sob escaping her lips. "Yes!" she cried softly, dropping to her knees beside him and throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Ethan! A thousand times yes!"

Ethan pulled her close, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss as the warm night wind swept through the rose garden around them.
