Chapter 14 - The Shadow King

Ethan drew his weapon instantly, pulling Clara behind him as a concealed door behind the central server node slid open.
Stepping out from the shadows was a tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke three-piece suit. He carried himself with absolute authority, his face holding a striking resemblance to Ethan’s father, though hardened by decades of unbridled power.
"Grandfather..." Ethan breathed, his eyes narrowing in shock. "Charles Vance."
"I am disappointed, Ethan," Charles Vance said smoothly, walking slowly toward the glass barrier with his hands folded neatly behind his back. "You had everything. Wealth, status, power. And you threw it all away to chase ghosts and run off with Arthur Sterling’s stray daughter."
"You murdered my father!" Ethan roared, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his gun. "You murdered him and framed Arthur Sterling!"
Charles sneered, showing no remorse whatsoever. "Your father was weak! He lacked the vision to understand what we were building. The Syndicate doesn't just manage money, Ethan. We manage governments. We control wars. We decide who prospers and who starves. Your father wanted to blow the whistle... so I put him down like a rabid dog."
Clara stepped out from behind Ethan, her voice cutting through the hum of the cooling fans like a razor blade. "And what about my father? Was he weak too?"
Charles turned his gaze toward Clara, his eyes cold and devoid of humanity. "Arthur was too smart for his own good. He built the very encryption systems that keep our empire invisible. But when he tried to lock us out... I burned his factory with him inside it. Just as I am about to burn the two of you."
Charles raised his hand, gesturing to the heavy steel observation glass above them. Four heavily armed operatives in elite mercenary gear appeared, aiming heavy automatic rifles down into the glass enclosure.
"You have five seconds to drop your weapons," Charles said coldly. "Or I give the order to turn this server room into a firing range."
Ethan didn't drop his gun. Instead, a slow, dark smile broke across his face—the same deadly smile he had worn in the woods of the Pacific Northwest.
"You forgot one thing, Grandfather," Ethan whispered.
Charles frowned. "And what is that?"

"You built your security system using my father’s original code," Clara said, tapping a single red button on her wrist tablet. "And I have the master override."
Before Charles could react, the entire server hall plunged into pitch-black darkness as a massive electromagnetic pulse (EMP) detonated within the core.
