Chapter 4 - Fire and Rain

The deafening chatter of gunfire shattered the quiet rumble of the rain. Marcus hit the gas pedal, the high-torque engine of the modified SUV roaring as he deliberately rammed the side of the attacker's chase car, shoving it into an oncoming semi-truck. The resulting explosion lit up the night in a bright orange fireball, illuminating the twisted metal and burning debris scattered across the highway.

"Hold fast!" Marcus screamed, executing a dangerous bootlegger turn that sent the SUV sliding onto a dirt logging road hidden by thick evergreen trees.

Ethan raised his head, checking Clara and Chloe. Clara’s face was pale, but her arms remained locked tightly around the child, who was crying hysterically against her chest. "Are you hurt?" Ethan demanded, his eyes sweeping over her for blood or injury.

"We’re okay," Clara breathed out, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. "We’re okay, Ethan."

The SUV bumped violently down the dirt track, tree branches scraping against the cracked bulletproof windows like desperate claws. After two miles of treacherous off-road driving, Marcus brought the battered vehicle to a stop inside an abandoned timber barn deep in the woods. He killed the lights and engine, plunging them into absolute darkness except for the soft glow of the dashboard instrument panel.

"They had our GPS tracking," Marcus growled, unbuckling his harness and checking his sidearm magazine. "Someone inside our logistics hub leaked our convoy route. We’re dark for now, but Vance’s hounds won't take long to circle back."

Ethan unbuckled his belt and turned to Clara. In the dim light, his face was etched with a dark, primal rage that was no longer restrained by high-society decorum. "They tried to kill my family," he said softly, every word dripping with lethal intent. "No more defensive maneuvers. No more courts. No more play-it-by-the-book."

He reached out, his hand cupping Clara’s cheek gently, his thumb tracing her cheekbone. "Clara, I need you to take Chloe to the safehouse in Vancouver. Marcus will take you across the border on foot through the mountain trail."

"No," Clara snapped instantly, catching his wrist. Her voice carried an intensity that surprised even Ethan. "I’m not running, Ethan. You think I’m just a victim you need to save? I’ve spent my entire life being pushed around by powerful, cruel people like Victoria and Vance. If we split up, they’ll hunt us down individually. We strike back together."

Ethan stared at her, seeing for the first time the fierce, unbreakable spirit behind her quiet demeanor. A slow, dangerous smile crept onto his lips—the smile of a man who had finally found his true equal.

"All right," Ethan said, pulling her toward him and pressing a passionate, fiery kiss onto her lips. The taste of salt and rain was on her skin, but the heat between them burned hotter than the wreckage on the highway. When he pulled back, his eyes were blazing. "Then let's go tear down their kingdom."
