Chapter 2 : The Weight of the White Envelope

Chapter 2 : The Weight of the White Envelope

The heavy, steel doors of the emergency surgical wing slammed shut, cutting off Marcus from the only thing in the world that mattered.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Marcus stood in the sterile hallway, the tablet still gripped tightly in his hands. The video of Isabella’s brutal attack looped silently on the screen. He didn't look at it. His mind was entirely consumed by the frozen frame he had seen just moments before.

Seventeen seconds. A white envelope. Khloe’s handbag.

"Marcus," Dr. Adrian Bennett’s voice cut through the thick, frozen air. The older man placed a firm hand on his shoulder. "The police are here. They are taking Isabella into custody. What do you want to do with the footage?"

Marcus blinked, the cold reality of the hospital corridor rushing back to him. He looked down at the tablet, then handed it to the head of security.

"Give the police the raw file," Marcus ordered, his voice devoid of any emotion. It was the voice of a billionaire CEO who had just declared absolute war. "Charge her with attempted murder. If she tries to post bail, contact our legal team. Block every motion. She does not see the light of day."

Isabella’s hysterical screams echoed from down the hall as two uniformed officers dragged her toward the elevators in handcuffs. "Marcus! You can't do this! I am a Rossi! My family will destroy you!"

Marcus didn't even turn his head. She was already a ghost to him.

He walked purposefully back toward Suite 1708. The crime scene tape had not yet been placed. The room was perfectly preserved in its horrific state. The overturned marble table. The shattered glass. The horrifying, crimson stains on the white floor.

His eyes scanned the room until they locked onto it.

Tucked beneath a fallen chair was Khloe’s designer handbag.

Marcus knelt down. His hands, which had negotiated billion-dollar mergers without a single tremor, were shaking uncontrollably as he unclasped the leather bag. He reached inside, pushing past her makeup compact and her keys.

His fingers brushed against thick, premium paper.

He pulled it out. The white envelope. The wax seal of the Thorne Family Trust was broken.

This document was never supposed to leave his impenetrable office vault. It was the "Genesis Ledger"—a shadow accounting book that proved his late father, the legendary founder of Thorne Industries, had built the family’s early empire on a foundation of massive, systemic fraud. If this ledger went public, the SEC would dismantle the company, the board members would go to federal prison, and the Thorne legacy would be reduced to ash.

Isabella’s family, the Rossis, had known about it. They had been silently blackmailing Marcus for two years, demanding mergers, demanding seats on his board, and ultimately, demanding that he leave Khloe to marry Isabella to merge their empires completely.

But why did Khloe have it?

Marcus carefully unfolded the document. A small, handwritten note slipped out from between the pages, fluttering to the floor.

Marcus picked it up. He instantly recognized Khloe’s elegant handwriting.

My dearest Marcus, If you are reading this, I have already handed the ledger to the federal prosecutor. I know the Rossi family is threatening you. I know they are forcing you to choose between your father’s legacy and our family. I won't let you carry this burden anymore. I am burning the empire down to set you free. Forgive me. I love you. - Khloe

Marcus stopped breathing.

She hadn't stolen the envelope to betray him. She had stolen it to save him. She was willing to sacrifice the billions, the mansions, the entire Thorne dynasty, just so the Rossi family could never blackmail him again. She had faced Isabella today not as a frightened wife, but as a fearless protector.

"Mr. Thorne?"

Marcus snapped his head up. A surgical nurse stood in the doorway, her scrubs stained with a terrifying amount of blood. Her face was pale.

May you like

"It's your wife, sir," the nurse gasped, her chest heaving. "Her blood pressure is dropping rapidly. Dr. Bennett says you need to come right now. She’s crashing."

The white envelope fell from Marcus’s hands. The billionaire empire was instantly forgotten. He ran.
