Chapter 9 : The Edge of the Cliff

The rain poured down in relentless sheets over Queens. Marcus ar

rived at Khloe's small apartment building, taking the stairs three at a time. When he burst through her front door, he found Khloe standing in the living room, holding a small suitcase. Her eyes were wide with anxiety, her hand resting gently over her stomach.

Marcus rushed forward, pulling her into a fierce, protective embrace. He held her tight, feeling the soft rhythm of her breathing. "I won't let anything happen to you or our baby," he promised, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "We are leaving the city today."

"Where will we go?" Khloe asked, looking up at him with tears in her eyes. "Marcus, she has power, money, media... she can track us anywhere."

"I have a safe house upstate," Marcus said quickly. "No record of it exists on corporate balance sheets. We’ll go there, gather our legal defense, and expose her."

They rushed down the back stairwell into the alleyway where Marcus had parked his car. But as they stepped out into the pouring rain, two heavy black SUVs slammed to a halt, blocking both ends of the narrow alley.

The doors opened, and four large men in dark suits stepped out, holding rain umbrellas. From the back seat of the primary SUV, Isabella Rossi stepped into the alley, her white designer coat untouched by the rain.

"Going somewhere, Marcus?" Isabella asked, her voice dripping with venom. "It's rude to leave in the middle of a board meeting."

Marcus stepped in front of Khloe, shielding her body with his own. "This is between you and me, Isabella. Let her go. She has nothing to do with Thorne Industries."

Isabella stepped closer, her eyes scanning Khloe from head to toe before resting on the subtle way Marcus held his hand behind him, protecting Khloe's abdomen. Isabella’s sharp mind put the pieces together instantly, and her expression turned wicked.

"Oh, I see," Isabella sneered, a cruel laugh escaping her lips. "A secret love child. How wonderfully tragic. You really thought you could trade me for this baseline peasant?"

"Isabella, warning you now," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble. "If you take one step closer to her, I will destroy everything your family owns. I have copies of the offshore ledger you thought you hid."

Isabella’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, revealing a spark of genuine fury. "You're bluffing. Search them," she ordered her security men. "Take his phone and drive them to the warehouse in Jersey. We'll settle the ownership transfer tonight."

As the men surged forward, Marcus didn't hesitate. He grabbed a heavy iron trash container and shoved it violently into the first guard, knocking him into the wet pavement.

"Khloe, run!" Marcus roared.

Khloe turned and sprinted toward the street, but in the blinding rain and panic, her foot caught on an uneven edge of the curb. She fell hard onto the concrete, a sharp cry of pain escaping her lips as she landed awkwardly on her side.

"Khloe!" Marcus screamed. He threw off the second guard with terrifying strength born of pure desperation and threw himself over Khloe's body as the remaining men tried to grab him.

Khloe gasped, clutching her stomach, her face pale as snow. "Marcus... something's wrong... the baby..."

Panic, cold and absolute, seized Marcus’s heart. He looked up at Isabella, his eyes burning with a terrifying rage that made even the ruthless heiress take a step back.

"Call an ambulance!" Marcus yelled, his voice cracking with emotion. "If she dies, Isabella, I swear on my life, no court on earth will be able to save you from me!"

Isabella looked at Khloe groaning in pain on the wet ground, then at the street where onlookers were beginning to gather, hearing the commotion. Realizing the situation was spiraling out of control, Isabella sneered, stepped back into her SUV, and ordered her driver to speed away into the night.
