Chapter 3 : The Edge of the Abyss

Chapter 3 : The Edge of the Abyss

The surgical theater was a chaotic symphony of alarms, flashing monitors, and shouted medical commands.

"Push another unit of O-negative!" Dr. Bennett yelled over the frantic beeping of the heart monitor. "Clamp that artery, we are losing her!"

Marcus was forced to stop at the observation window, pressing his hands against the cold glass. The scene on the other side was a nightmare. Khloe looked impossibly fragile under the harsh surgical lights. There were tubes everywhere. A machine was breathing for her.

"Come on, Khloe," Marcus whispered, hot tears finally breaking through his stoic facade, streaming down his cheeks. "You promised not to leave me. You promised."

He watched as Dr. Bennett worked with furious, desperate precision. The placental abruption caused by Isabella’s violent kick had triggered massive internal hemorrhaging. Khloe was fighting a battle on two fronts—her own life, and the life of their unborn child.

"Heart rate is stabilizing," an anesthesiologist called out. "But the fetal distress is critical. We have to deliver the baby now, Dr. Bennett, or we lose them both."

Dr. Bennett didn't hesitate. "Prepare for an emergency C-section. Get the NICU team in here right now!"

For Marcus, time stopped. The seconds stretched into agonizing hours. He watched through the glass, entirely helpless, as the medical team worked frantically to pull their child from the wreckage of Isabella’s cruelty.

And then, it happened.

The surgical lights shifted. Dr. Bennett lifted a tiny, incredibly small figure into the air.

There was no sound.

Marcus’s heart stopped. The baby wasn't crying.

The NICU team rushed forward, taking the tiny infant to the warming table. They began chest compressions. Tiny masks. Tiny tubes. Marcus pressed his forehead against the glass, sobbing openly now, his shoulders shaking with the weight of absolute terror.

Thump. Thump.

A faint, muffled sound came through the intercom.

Then, a weak, raspy, but undeniably beautiful cry pierced the sterile air.

Marcus dropped to his knees. The relief was a physical weight crashing over him.

Ten minutes later, Dr. Bennett stepped out of the surgical theater. He looked exhausted, stripping off his bloodied gloves. He walked over to Marcus and pulled the younger man to his feet, wrapping him in a fierce, fatherly embrace.

"She is a fighter, Marcus," Dr. Bennett said, his voice thick with emotion. "Khloe is stable. She’s in an induced coma to help her body heal from the trauma, but she is going to make it. And your daughter... she’s small, she’s premature, but she has her mother’s strength. She's in the NICU. She's alive."

"Can I see them?" Marcus choked out, wiping his face.

"You can see your daughter," Dr. Bennett nodded. "Khloe needs complete rest. But Marcus... I need to warn you. The police have been waiting downstairs. The Rossi family is moving. Isabella’s father has filed an emergency injunction. He’s claiming Khloe assaulted Isabella first, and he has a corrupt judge in his pocket who is signing a gag order on the hospital security footage."

Marcus’s eyes hardened. The tears dried, replaced by a cold, terrifying fire.

"They think they can bury the truth," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"They have unlimited money, Marcus," Dr. Bennett warned. "They can buy the media. They can buy the courts."

Marcus reached into his jacket pocket. He pulled out the white envelope. He had retrieved it from the floor before running to the OR.

"Money only protects you when the system works," Marcus said, his eyes burning with absolute, lethal intent. "But tomorrow morning, there won't be a system left to protect them."
