Chapter 7 : The Gilded Tower

Chapter 7 : The Gilded Tower

The glass walls of Thorne Tower rose eighty stories above Manhattan, reflecting a cold, gray skyline. Inside the penthouse office, Marcus Thorne stood looking down at the crawling yellow taxis below. At thirty-four, he was the undisputed titan of Wall Street. Business journals called him "The Ice King"—a genius who turned failing companies into billion-dollar juggernauts without ever showing a single trace of human emotion.
To the world, Marcus had everything: unlimited power, untouchable wealth, and a glowing engagement to Isabella Rossi, the dazzling heiress of Rossi International.
Isabella walked into his office, her red heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor. She smoothed down her tailored silk dress and set a leather-bound folder on his desk.
"The board approved the takeover of the bio-tech research center," Isabella said, her voice smooth as velvet, carrying the polished chill of elite high society. "We close the deal on Friday. Once we liquidate their non-profit assets, Thorne Industries will control the region's entire pharmaceutical supply."
Marcus didn't turn around immediately. His eyes flicked to a small photograph hidden inside his desk drawer—a picture of a young woman with warm brown eyes and a genuine smile, standing in front of a community health clinic.
Her name was Khloe.
Unknown to Isabella and the high-society hawks that circled Marcus, Khloe was the only real thing in his calculated existence. Two years prior, Marcus had met Khloe when Thorne Industries attempted to demolish her local health shelter. Instead of backing down, Khloe had stood up to him with fierce determination, demanding he see the human cost of his bottomless greed. Intrigued and quietly humbled, Marcus had secretly halted the demolition, funding the clinic out of his personal pocket. Over time, their secret meetings had blossomed into a profound, unconditional love. Khloe saw the wounded boy beneath Marcus’s cold armor, and Marcus saw in Khloe the life he had traded away for wealth.
"Did you hear me, Marcus?" Isabella asked, leaning against his desk, her sharp eyes studying his expressionless face. "This deal makes us untouchable."
"The research center provides life-saving trials for underprivileged families, Isabella," Marcus said quietly, turning around. "If we liquidate it, hundreds of patients lose treatment."
Isabella laughed—a melodic, hollow sound. "Marcus, since when do you care about charity? Business isn't about saving lives; it's about ownership. Leave the sentimentality to the weak."
Marcus felt a cold shudder run down his spine. Isabella didn't just want financial power; she possessed a ruthless malice that terrified him. For months, Marcus had been quietly working on a strategy to sever his company’s ties with the corrupt Rossi empire and step down. But Isabella was no fool. She had built a network of corporate spies, and her influence over the board was growing stronger every day.
Later that evening, Marcus met Khloe at a quiet, secluded cafe on the outskirts of Queens. The contrast between his two worlds was stark. Here, surrounded by warm yellow lighting and the smell of roasted coffee, Marcus felt his shoulders untense.
Khloe reached across the small wooden table, taking his hands in hers. Her touch was warm, grounding him instantly. "You look exhausted, Marcus," she whispered gently. "Is it Isabella again?"
"She’s pushing the takeover," Marcus admitted, his voice heavy. "If she finds out about my plans to pull out of the Rossi deal, she’ll ruin everything I’ve tried to rebuild. I’m trying to protect you, Khloe. If she ever realizes what you mean to me..."
"I’m not afraid of her, Marcus," Khloe said softly, squeezing his hands. "I only worry about you. You're living in a cage made of gold and lies. You don't belong in that world anymore."
What neither of them knew was that across the street, sitting inside a dark tinted SUV, a private investigator was snapping high-resolution photographs of Marcus holding Khloe’s hand.
An hour later, those photographs were delivered directly into the hands of Isabella Rossi.

In her dimly lit penthouse, Isabella stared at the images of Khloe. A dark, vengeful smile crept across her face as she poured a glass of vintage wine.
"So, Marcus... this is your dirty little secret," Isabella murmured, tracing her long fingernail over Khloe's face in the photo. "You think you can betray me for a nobody? I will tear your life apart, piece by piece."
