Chapter 5 : Awakening

The morning sun filtered softly through the blinds of the VIP recovery suite, painting the room in a warm, golden glow.

The constant, terrifying beep of the monitors had faded into a slow, steady rhythm.

Marcus sat in the uncomfortable hospital chair, his head resting gently on the edge of the mattress, his hand tightly holding Khloe's pale fingers. He hadn't left her side for three days. The corporate world was in absolute chaos. The news cycle was dominated by the catastrophic fall of the Thorne and Rossi empires. But inside this room, none of it existed.

There was only Khloe.

He felt a slight twitch in his hand.

Marcus shot up, his heart hammering against his ribs.

Khloe’s eyelids fluttered. She let out a soft, painful groan, slowly turning her head toward the warmth of his hand. Her dark eyes, exhausted but beautiful, slowly opened, adjusting to the morning light.

"Marcus..." her voice was barely a whisper, dry and fragile.

"I'm here," Marcus choked out, pressing desperate, reverent kisses to her knuckles. "I'm right here, my love. You're safe. I've got you."

Khloe’s breathing hitched as the memories of the attack suddenly flooded back. Her free hand immediately flew to her stomach, which was now flat and wrapped in thick medical bandages. Absolute terror seized her face.

"The baby... Marcus... my baby...!"

"She's alive," Marcus said instantly, cupping her face, forcing her to look at his tear-filled, joyful eyes. "She’s alive, Khloe. She is perfect. She is in the NICU, and she is getting stronger every single hour. She is a fighter, just like her mother."

Khloe let out a shattered sob, the tension leaving her body as she melted into the pillows. She wept openly, the tears mixing with Marcus’s as he leaned down and pressed his forehead against hers.

"Isabella..." Khloe whispered, her body trembling slightly.

"Is in federal prison," Marcus promised, his voice firm and absolute. "Along with her father, and my uncle Victor. I used the ledger, Khloe. I burned the whole toxic empire down, just like you wanted to. They can never hurt us again. We are completely free."

Khloe looked at him, searching his face. "You gave up everything. Your father's company... your billions..."

"I gave up a cage," Marcus corrected her gently, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "You are my everything. You and our daughter. That is the only legacy I will ever care about."

The door to the suite opened softly. Dr. Bennett walked in, pushing a specialized, climate-controlled clear medical bassinet. The nurse walking beside him was beaming.

"I thought a certain mother might want to meet someone," Dr. Bennett smiled warmly.

Marcus stood up, helping adjust Khloe’s pillows so she could sit up slightly. He reached into the bassinet, his large hands incredibly gentle, and lifted the tiny bundle wrapped in a soft pink blanket.

He walked over and carefully placed their daughter onto Khloe’s chest.

Khloe looked down at the tiny, sleeping face. The baby had a shock of dark hair and perfect, tiny features. As Khloe brushed her finger against the baby’s cheek, the infant instinctively turned and wrapped her impossibly small fingers around Khloe’s thumb.

"Hello, little one," Khloe whispered, her heart completely overflowing with a love so fierce it physically ached. She looked up at Marcus, a radiant, beautiful smile breaking through the exhaustion and pain. "What do we name her?"

May you like

Marcus sat on the edge of the bed, wrapping his arms around both of them, burying his face in Khloe’s neck.

"Hope," Marcus answered softly. "Because she is the hope that pulled us out of the darkness."
