Chapter 10 : Through the Valley

The red and blue lights of the emergency vehicles flashed against the rain-slicked glass of Saint Jude’s Hospital. Inside the trauma unit, the air was thick with the sterile scent of antiseptic and underlying tension.

Marcus paced the corridor outside the emergency surgery wing, his clothes soaked through, his knuckles raw and bruised. Every second felt like an eternity. The powerful CEO who had once commanded boards of directors was now completely powerless, stripped of his pride, praying silently for the lives of the woman he loved and the child he had yet to meet.

The double doors swung open, and a doctor in blue scrubs walked out, pulling down his surgical mask.

Marcus rushed forward. "How is she? How is the baby?"

"She suffered severe abdominal trauma from the fall, complicated by high stress," the doctor said gravely. "We stabilized Ms. Vance, but she is in extreme premature labor. She's only twenty-eight weeks pregnant, Mr. Thorne. We have to perform an emergency Cesarean section right now to save both her and the baby."

Marcus felt the ground slipping beneath his feet. "Will they survive?"

"We are doing everything humanly possible," the doctor replied firm. "You need to sign the consent forms immediately."

Without hesitation, Marcus signed the paperwork. As the medical team wheeled Khloe past him toward the operating theater, Marcus grabbed her cold hand. Her eyes fluttered open, weak and filled with fear.

"Marcus..." she whispered, her voice barely a breath. "Don't let them lose our baby..."

"I'm right here, my love," Marcus sobbed softly, pressing his lips to her pale knuckles. "I'm not going anywhere. You're both going to make it. I promise you."

While Khloe was taken into surgery, Marcus sat on a hard bench in the hallway. He pulled out a small, encrypted tablet he had hidden in his jacket—the one device Isabella’s goons hadn't found. For years, as a precaution, Marcus had kept a backup log of every financial transaction made by Rossi International, waiting for the day he could sever ties safely.

He didn't care about saving Thorne Industries anymore. He didn't care about his fortune, his reputation, or his high-society standing. None of it meant anything without Khloe and their child.

With steady hands, Marcus logged into the federal whistleblower portal. He attached every piece of evidence: the forged documents Isabella had created, the money laundering records of the Rossi family, and the security footage of Isabella orchestrating the attack in the alleyway.

He hit Send.

An hour later, the doctor re-entered the waiting area. His expression was tired, but his eyes held a glimmer of hope.

"Mr. Thorne?"

Marcus stood up instantly, holding his breath.

"It was a difficult procedure, but Khloe made it through surgery," the doctor announced. "She is resting in the ICU. And you have a daughter, Mr. Thorne. She is very small—weighing just under three pounds—and she needs respiratory support in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, but she is a fighter."

Tears streamed down Marcus's face as he sank back onto the bench, overwhelmed by a wave of profound relief and humility. "A daughter..." he whispered. "Hope. Her name is Hope."
