Chapter 8 : Poisoned Ties

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds over Manhattan, but inside the boardroom of Thorne Industries, the atmosphere was lethal.
Marcus sat at the head of the long mahogany table. Isabella sat directly across from him, wearing a sharp white suit. Her face was a mask of cold composure, but her eyes glittered with dangerous intent.
"Before we begin the vote on the buyout," Isabella said, standing up and holding a silver flash drive, "I believe the board deserves full transparency regarding the leadership of this company."
Marcus’s chest tightened. "Isabella, this meeting is about corporate acquisition. Stick to the agenda."
"Oh, it is about acquisition, Marcus," Isabella purred. She walked over to the digital projector and plugged in the flash drive. The massive display screens on the wall lit up instantly.
Marcus’s heart stopped.
The screens didn't show financial spreadsheets. They showed detailed financial logs indicating that millions of dollars from Thorne Industries’ private reserve had been redirected over the past eighteen months to fund an unapproved bio-medical clinic in Queens. And right next to the bank statements were clear photos of Marcus with Khloe.
Gasping sounds echoed through the boardroom. The board members leaned in, whispering frantically among themselves.
"Marcus Thorne has been embezzling company funds to support his secret mistress and her illegitimate medical venture," Isabella announced smoothly, her voice echoing off the glass walls. "He has compromised our security, breached his fiduciary duty, and endangered our merger."
Marcus slammed his hands on the table, standing up, his tall frame looming over the room. "That money came from my private equity account, Isabella! Not company reserves. You manipulated those financial logs!"

"Can you prove that, Marcus?" Isabella replied softly, leaning in close so only he could hear her. "Because right now, the audit report bears your digital signature. By noon, the media will have these files. You’ll be ruined. And as for your sweet little charity worker..." She leaned closer, her eyes gleaming with absolute cruelty. "I wonder how well her fragile health will hold up under a federal investigation?"
Marcus realized with sickening clarity that Isabella had been planning this trap for months. She had forged his digital signature on offshore transactions to frame him for grand embezzlement, using Khloe as leverage to destroy his credibility before he could expose her family's illegal money laundering.
Without a word, Marcus pushed back his chair and walked out of the boardroom, ignoring the shouts of the board members. He took the private elevator straight to the garage, his heart pounding in his chest. He pulled out his phone and dialed Khloe’s number.
It rang three times before she answered. "Marcus? Is everything okay?"
"Khloe, listen to me very carefully," Marcus said, his voice laced with urgent panic as he got into his car. "You need to pack a bag right now. Leave the clinic. Don't speak to anyone. Isabella knows about us. She’s coming after you."
There was a long pause on the line. Then Khloe’s voice came back, quiet and trembling. "Marcus... there's something else you need to know."
"What is it?"
Khloe took a deep, shaky breath. "I went to the doctor this morning, Marcus. I was going to tell you tonight... I'm pregnant."
Marcus froze, the steering wheel tight in his hands. A surge of fierce, protective emotion washed over him, drowning out the fear. He was going to be a father. He had a family to protect.

"Stay where you are," Marcus whispered, his voice steadying with iron resolve. "I'm coming to get you. I won't let her touch either of you."
As Marcus sped out of the parking garage into the rainy streets, he failed to notice the heavy black sedan pulling out from the shadows behind him, trailing his every move.
