Chapter 11: The Invisible Thread

Back at the federal task force headquarters, Ethan sat beside the chief cyber-forensics officer, watching lines of code map out signal frequencies across the city map.
"The radio didn't just have a storage drive," Ethan explained, pointing a slender finger at a peak in the frequency wave. "The circuit board had a modified high-frequency crystal oscillator. Vanessa thought it was just a power component, but it’s an active radio frequency transceiver."
Agent Ruiz leaned over Ethan’s shoulder. "What does that mean in plain English, Ethan?"
"It means Adrian didn't send that text to Mom from a random location," Ethan revealed, his eyes sharp with discovery. "The radio's transmitter is paired to a local relay node. He’s not at Miller’s Creek. Miller’s Creek is a decoy to get Dad out in the open where his security can't reach him."
Nathan walked into the lab, holding his coat. "Where is he actually operating from?"
Ethan zoomed in on a satellite map, highlighting a two-mile radius around an abandoned industrial park near the old harbor shipping yards. "The signal relay bouncing off the radio's frequency is coming from warehouse four at the Port of Blackwood. He’s stayed close because he needs to physically capture the raw broadcast from the drive once it's plugged in."
"He's setting up a double ambush," Ruiz said, slamming his hand on the desk. "He sends Nathan to Miller's Creek, keeps his tactical team waiting there, while he remote-hacks the data feed from his safehouse at the port."
Claire stepped into the command room, holding a small metallic object. It was the original silver pin Vanessa had dropped in the hallway weeks ago.
"Ethan," Claire said gently. "Is there any chance this pin has a matching circuit?"
Ethan took the pin, using a magnifying lamp to inspect the micro-casing. He gasped softly. "It’s the decryption token! The pin isn't just evidence—it’s the physical key that unlocks the drive without triggering the auto-purge!"
Nathan looked at his son, pride swelling in his heart so strongly it nearly took his breath away. "You found the drive, and you found the key."
"We found it together," Ethan said, looking up at his father. The long wall of cold silence between father and son shattered in that single moment.
Nathan reached out, placing his hands firmly on Ethan’s shoulders. "I am so proud of you, Ethan. I am sorry it took me so long to see clearly."

Ethan nodded, a small, genuine smile breaking across his face. "Go finish it, Dad. But this time, take the FBI with you."
"Oh, we’re coming," Ruiz smiled, checking his sidearm. "And Adrian Cole is about to find out that Hale Aerospace doesn't play defense."
