Chapter 20: The Battle for Integrity

By the following morning, the news of the massive lawsuit had shattered Wall Street. Hale Aerospace stock plummeted by eighteen percent in pre-market trading, and cable news networks aired sensationalized segments questioning whether Nathan Hale had stolen his breakthrough drone technology from his former business partner.

To make matters worse, Julian’s attacks were not confined to the boardroom.

At the state university where Ethan was pursuing his advanced engineering degree, rumors began spreading like wildfire. Anonymous posts on student forums alleged that Ethan’s top marks and research grants were the result of corporate bribery and stolen academic code.

Ethan walked into his afternoon robotics lab only to find his workstation locked by the department head.

"Ethan," Professor Harrison said regretfully, holding a heavy folder. "An anonymous formal complaint was filed with the university ethics board this morning. It includes code snippets from your drone relay project that match patented files registered to Vance Global."

Ethan felt a surge of indignation, but he kept his composure, remembering how his father had faced down Adrian Cole. "Professor Harrison, I wrote every line of that code in my father's garage over three months. I have the timestamped local git commits on my private hard drive."

"Until the university legal counsel reviews those logs, Ethan," the professor said softly, "you are suspended from all research facilities."

Ethan packed his backpack in silence and walked out of the building. But instead of feeling defeated, he felt an icy, dangerous clarity settle over him. Julian Vance was using the exact same playbook his nephew Adrian had used—trying to destroy the family from the inside out by targeting their self-worth.

When Ethan arrived home, he found Claire sitting at the kitchen island, surrounded by thick binders of corporate law documents, financial audit reports, and legal precedent files. Her eyes were sharp, her determination unwavering.

"Mom," Ethan said, dropping his bag onto a chair. "They suspended me from the lab."

Claire stopped writing immediately. She stood up, walked over to her son, and tucked a strand of hair behind his ear. "I know, sweetheart. I received the notice from the dean twenty minutes ago."

"I didn't steal anything, Mom," Ethan said firmly.

"I know you didn't," Claire said, her voice dropping into a low, fiercely protective tone. "And that's why Julian Vance just made the biggest mistake of his life. He thought he was dealing with a corporation. He didn't realize he was coming after a mother protecting her child."

Claire turned back to her legal binders. For the past six years, Claire had put her legal career on hold to manage the family's charitable initiatives. But before that, she had been one of the top corporate litigation strategists in the state—a brilliant legal mind who had dismantled corrupt corporate entities long before Nathan built Hale Aerospace.

"What's the plan, Mom?" Ethan asked, leaning over the table.

Claire opened a blue folder containing old, yellowed tax filings from 2011. "Julian claims the paper contracts were destroyed in the 2011 fire. What he doesn't know is that long before your father and I were married, I insisted that all original co-founder incorporation tax filings be registered with the State Department of Revenue under physical microfiche."

Claire smiled—a sharp, triumphant smile. "Julian erased the company archives, but he forgot about the state tax board. Tomorrow morning, we are filing a counter-lawsuit for corporate extortion, fraud, and racketeering."
