Chapter 10: Shadows over Hale Aerospace

The sun rose over the glass-and-steel headquarters of Hale Aerospace, but inside the executive boardroom, the atmosphere was freezing.

Nathan walked through the heavy double doors dressed in a dark charcoal suit. Beside him was not his legal team, but Claire. Her presence sent a ripple of quiet surprise through the twelve members of the board of directors assembled around the long mahogany table.

At the head of the table sat Richard Vance, the board's chief investor, who had led the charge to strip Nathan of his executive authority after the scandal broke.

"Nathan," Richard began, resting his hands on a thick white binder. "Your presence here is unexpected. The board was about to vote on an emergency motion to appoint an interim CEO while the Department of Defense completes its audit."

"I know why you're here, Richard," Nathan said, remaining standing. His voice resonated through the room with absolute clarity. "You think Hale Aerospace is dying. You think I am a compromised liability who brought scandal into my home and allowed a breach of national security."

"Can you prove otherwise?" Richard challenged coldly. "The government contract is suspended. The stock has dropped fourteen percent in three days. And media outlets are openly questioning your character."

Before Nathan could speak, Margaret Hale entered the boardroom from the side entrance. She looked older, her face lined with the pain of her recent realization, but she carried herself with quiet dignity.

"I can answer that question, Mr. Vance," Margaret said, her voice trembling slightly before steadying.

The board members murmured in confusion. Margaret had always kept far away from corporate affairs.

"I am Nathan’s mother," Margaret continued, standing beside Claire. "And I am the person who allowed Vanessa into my son's house. I was foolish. I allowed myself to be flattered by a woman who used my vanity and my loneliness to betray my family. I handed her the key to my son’s private study because she lied to me."

Margaret looked directly at Richard Vance. "Nathan’s only mistake was trusting that his mother had good judgment. If you want to punish someone for the security breach that allowed the prototype files to be copied, punish me. But do not strip this company of the man who built every single line of code with complete integrity."

Claire stepped forward, placing a sealed folder on the table in front of Richard.

"In that file," Claire stated firmly, "are the certified forensic reports provided by Agent Ruiz of the FBI. They confirm that Nathan Hale never logged into the secure servers from the downtown hotel. They confirm that his credentials were cloned using hardware installed by Vanessa and funded by Adrian Cole."

Richard opened the folder, scanning the federal seals and official signatures. The hostility in his eyes began to give way to uncertainty.

"Nathan," Richard said, softening slightly. "If this is true, where is Adrian Cole now?"

"He’s waiting for me," Nathan replied. "And by tonight, Hale Aerospace will either be completely destroyed, or Adrian Cole will be in federal custody."

Nathan looked across the table at the men and women who had built the company alongside him. "I am not asking for your sympathy. I am asking for twelve hours. Let me finish what was started in my home. If I fail, you can have my resignation on this table by dawn."

Richard looked at the board members, seeing unanimous nods around the room. He closed the binder. "You have twelve hours, Nathan. Don't let us down."
