Chapter 22: The Crucible of Truth

The federal court moved with lightning speed. Within forty-eight hours of Claire’s devastating presentation in court, Judge Vance dismissed Julian’s lawsuit with prejudice, stripping Vance Global of all legal claims and issuing an immediate federal search warrant for Julian’s corporate headquarters.
However, a cornered predator is at its most dangerous.
Late that Friday evening, as storm clouds rolled out over the coast, Nathan was working late in his office at Hale Aerospace, reviewing the restored operational logs for the disaster relief network. The building was mostly empty, save for a few security guards patrolling the perimeter.
His desk phone rang. It was an unlisted line.
Nathan picked it up. "Nathan Hale."
"You think you’ve won, Nathan?" Julian’s voice came through the speaker, raspy, unhinged, and laced with quiet desperation. "You think a piece of paper from a judge stops me?"
"It’s over, Julian," Nathan said calmly. "The FBI is executing search warrants on your Dublin and New York offices right now. Give it up."
"I’m not in Dublin, Nathan," Julian hissed. "And I’m not in New York. I’m standing in your home garage."
Nathan’s heart stopped. His hand gripped the receiver so tightly his knuckles turned white. "If you touch my family—"
"I don't have your family," Julian interrupted with a sinister laugh. "Your wife and mother are at the community center, and your son is driving home from campus. But I do have something your son built. I have his primary server core—the one holding the raw, unencrypted source code for the entire Humanitarian Foundation network."
Nathan stood up from his desk, grabbing his coat. "Stay where you are, Julian. I'm coming."
"Come alone," Julian ordered. "If I see a single police light, I burn this garage to the ground, and your son’s life's work vanishes forever."
Nathan sprinted out of his office, taking the executive elevator down to the underground parking garage. As he got into his car, he dialed Agent Ruiz on his hands-free system.
"Ruiz," Nathan said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through his veins. "Julian is at my house. He’s in the garage."
"We’re ten minutes away with a tactical unit!" Ruiz warned. "Nathan, do not engage him alone! He has nothing left to lose!"

"I have to hold him there until Ethan gets home," Nathan replied. "I won't let him ruin my son’s life."
Nathan floored the accelerator, his sports sedan roaring out into the rain-slicked streets.
