Chapter 23: Fire in the Darkness

When Nathan pulled into his driveway fifteen minutes later, the Hale residence was dark, surrounded by swaying oak trees under a heavy downpour. The side door to the detached workshop garage stood slightly ajar, a dim yellow light leaking out onto the wet concrete.

Nathan stepped out of his car, keeping his hands visible as he walked slowly into the garage.

Inside, the workshop was in disarray. Toolboxes had been knocked over, and electronic components littered the floor. Julian Vance stood near Ethan’s central server rack, holding a heavy steel crowbar in one hand and a high-intensity industrial blowtorch in the other. His eyes were wild, bloodshot, and sunken.

"Look at this," Julian spat, pointing the crowbar at Ethan’s customized radio units. "A boy's toys. You built an empire on toys while I spent fifteen years in the mud!"

"Julian," Nathan said softly, taking a slow step forward, holding his hands up in a peaceful gesture. "Put the blowtorch down. It doesn't have to end like this."

"It already ended!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking with rage. "The court froze my accounts! My investors abandoned me! In twelve hours, I’ll be sitting in a federal holding cell next to my idiot nephew Adrian!"

"You put yourself there, Julian," Nathan said firmly. "You chose hatred over creation. You chose revenge over building something that matters."

"I built you!" Julian roared, stepping toward the server rack and clicking the blowtorch igniter. A bright blue flame hissed to life in the dim room. "And I can burn you down!"

"Dad!"

A voice echoed from the driveway. Ethan stepped into the garage, soaked from the rain, holding his phone high in his hand.

"Ethan, stay back!" Nathan shouted.

Julian turned toward Ethan, a twisted smile spreading across his face. "Ah, the prodigy. Watch closely, boy. Watch your precious work melt."

"Go ahead," Ethan said calmly, not taking a single step back.

Julian blinked, surprised by the teenager's absolute lack of fear. "What did you say?"

"I said go ahead and burn it," Ethan repeated, stepping beside his father. "That server rack is just a backup mirror. The moment you breached the perimeter three minutes ago, my automated security protocol uploaded the entire unencrypted source code to five secure cloud nodes across the country. You're holding a box of empty metal."

Julian’s face went completely pale. He looked at the server rack, then at Ethan’s phone, which displayed a green progress bar reading: SYNC COMPLETE — 100% SECURE.

"You... you lied to me..." Julian stammered, his strength collapsing inward.

Before Julian could react, the screech of tires echoed outside. Red and blue police lights flooded the garage windows as Agent Ruiz and six armed federal agents burst through the side doors, their weapons drawn.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP THE WEAPONS NOW!"

The steel crowbar clattered to the floor. The blowtorch slipped from Julian’s hand, its blue flame sputtering out as it hit the wet concrete.

Julian sank to his knees, his shoulders slumping in total, unmitigated defeat. Officers rushed forward, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As Julian was hauled to his feet, Nathan walked over to his son, wrapping a arm around Ethan’s shoulders. Ethan looked up at his father, giving him a quiet, triumphant nod.

"Nice work, kid," Nathan whispered.

"I learned from the best, Dad," Ethan replied.
