Chapter 14: The Confrontation

Adrian’s face twisted into sheer rage. He lunged for the pistol on the desk, but the glass windows of the office suddenly shattered inward in a shower of explosive sparks.
"FBI! DON'T MOVE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"
Tactical officers in full armor breached the office through the high windows and side stairwells, their green laser sights instantly painting Adrian's chest and head.
Vanessa shrieked, falling to her knees with her hands over her head. "I surrender! Don't shoot! It was all Adrian! He threatened me!"
Adrian grabbed the pistol, aiming it directly at Nathan’s chest with trembling hands. "If I'm going down, Hale, you're coming with me!"
Nathan didn't flinch. He stood his ground, staring straight into Adrian’s frantic eyes. "It's over, Adrian. You lost the moment you targeted my family."
"Drop the weapon, Cole!" Agent Ruiz’s voice thundered as he stepped through the breached doorway, his weapon leveled at Adrian’s head. "There are twenty tactical officers surrounding this building. You have nowhere to go."
Adrian looked from Nathan to Ruiz, his chest heaving as the reality of his total defeat washed over him. The master drive lay inches away, but the green laser dots covering his body proved he would never touch it again.
Slowly, agonizingly, Adrian’s fingers loosened. The heavy pistol clattered onto the concrete floor.
Two tactical officers tackled Adrian to the ground, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists. Another pair of officers hauled Vanessa up, placing her in restraints as she sobbed hysterically.
Ruiz stepped up to Nathan, clapping a hand on his back. "Clean execution, Nathan. The audio and video recording is crystal clear. The conspiracy charges alone will put both of them away for twenty years."
Nathan took a deep breath, feeling a massive weight lift from his lungs. He walked over to the table, picked up the metallic briefcase containing the black drive, and closed the lid.

As Adrian was dragged past Nathan, he glared up at him with bitter malice. "You got lucky, Hale. You were weak."
Nathan looked down at the man who had tried to destroy his life. "I wasn't weak, Adrian. I was distracted. But I remembered what actually matters. That’s something you’ll never understand."
