Chapter 9: The Cipher in the Old Radio

The cold metallic sheen of the black data drive felt heavier than it looked as Nathan held it under the bright LED light of his home workshop. Beside him, Agent Ruiz adjusted his glasses, leaning close to examine the microscopic serial numbers stamped onto its casing. Ethan stood quietly with his arms crossed, his eyes fixed on the workbench where his restored radio lay open.

"He didn't just hide it," Ruiz observed, his tone measured and grave. "He turned the radio into a passive receiver. If this drive was activated while plugged into an external circuit, it was designed to broadcast an encrypted burst signal to a localized receiver."

"Meaning Adrian didn't just want to steal the blueprints," Claire said, stepping into the garage. Her voice was firm, but her eyes reflected the intense strain of the past several weeks. "He wanted a permanent backdoor into Hale Aerospace. And he used a teenager's hobby to deliver it."

Nathan looked up at his wife, the weight of guilt pressing visibly against his shoulders. "Ethan saw through her when I didn't. I was so focused on saving the company and avoiding corporate scandal that I let a snake sleep under our roof."

"Dad," Ethan interrupted quietly, his tone devoid of anger for the first time in days. "Look at the drive again."

Ruiz picked up a specialized portable diagnostic tablet and connected the drive through an isolated, air-gapped terminal. The screen flickered to life, throwing sharp blue luminescence across their faces. Lines of red code began scrolling down at breakneck speed before slamming into a stark warning box:

SECURE CIPHER ACTIVE — 3 ATTEMPTS REMAINING — AUTOMATIC PURGE ON FAILURE

"It’s a double-layered cryptographic lock," Ruiz explained, tapping a few keys. "Adrian Cole built this drive to hold the full architectural schematics for the military guidance system—the ones Vanessa failed to destroy. But more importantly, it contains the financial trail connecting Adrian to his international buyers. It’s the smoking gun that completely exonerates Hale Aerospace and clears your name, Nathan."

"Can you crack it?" Nathan asked.

"Not without the primary passkey or the hardware token," Ruiz admitted. "And if we fail three times, the drive executes a thermal wipe. The data melts into useless silicon."

Before anyone could reply, Claire’s phone buzzed on the workbench. The screen displayed no caller ID, only a single line of text from an encrypted messaging app:

You found my radio. Smart boy. Now bring the drive to the old water treatment plant at Miller’s Creek by midnight, Nathan. Come alone, or the federal prosecutors will receive a fresh batch of fabricated evidence that will put you behind bars before sunrise.

Claire caught her breath, placing a hand over her mouth. "He's watching us. He knows Ethan found it."

Nathan took the phone, his jaw tightening as a calm, dangerous resolve washed over him. He had spent weeks defensive, confused, and drowning in doubt. But the moment the threat moved from his corporate reputation to his son and wife, the hesitation vanished entirely.

"He thinks I’m the same desperate man who believed Vanessa’s lies," Nathan said, turning to Ruiz. "He thinks I’m afraid."

"You can't go alone, Nathan," Claire said, stepping forward and taking his hand. It was the first time she had touched him voluntarily since the hotel video surfaced. "We aren't letting you walk into another trap."

"She’s right," Ruiz agreed. "We deploy a tactical team. We isolate Miller's Creek and take Adrian down before he realizes the net is closing."

"No," Nathan replied, staring at the glowing encrypted screen. "If Adrian sees a police perimeter, he disappears forever, and Hale Aerospace collapses under federal indictment. He wants the drive because he needs the master key to close his deal with his buyers. We give him the illusion of control... until we flip the switch."
