Chapter 21: A Line in the Sand

Chapter 21: A Line in the Sand

The next day, rain poured over the city as a major judicial hearing was convened at the Federal District Courthouse.
The grand courtroom was packed to capacity with corporate attorneys, tech executives, and national media reporters. At the plaintiff's table sat Julian Vance, dressed in a bespoke Italian suit, surrounded by a team of six high-priced defense lawyers.
Across the room sat Nathan, Claire, and Agent Ruiz. Ethan sat in the front row of the gallery directly behind his parents, holding a secure encrypted laptop.
Judge Eleanor Vance (no relation to Julian) banged her gavel down, restoring order to the noisy room.
"We are here to consider the emergency motion filed by Vance Global Holdings to permanently freeze all operational assets of Hale Aerospace and the Hale Humanitarian Foundation," Judge Vance announced. "Mr. Sterling, you may present your argument for the plaintiff."
Julian’s lead attorney stood up, adjusting his golden cufflinks. "Your Honor, the evidence is overwhelming. Nathan Hale built his current disaster response technology using algorithms stolen directly from my client, Julian Vance, during their early partnership in 2011. My client’s property has been misappropriated for public relations stunts disguised as charity."
"That is a complete fabrication, Your Honor," Claire stood up, stepping to the podium with absolute grace and confidence.
Julian smirked from his seat, whispering something condescending to his junior associate.
"Counselor Hale," Judge Vance said, eyeing Claire with mild curiosity. "You are representing the defense personally?"
"I am, Your Honor," Claire replied smoothly. "And I would like to submit Defense Exhibit A—a certified physical microfiche record retrieved directly from the vaults of the State Department of Revenue, stamped and sealed on August 14th, 2011."
Julian’s smirk instantly vanished. His lead attorney froze.
Claire walked over to the court clerk, handing over the sealed documents. "These records show that Julian Vance formally sold all intellectual property rights, patent drafts, and development claims back to Hale Aerospace for the sum of four hundred thousand dollars when he exited the partnership. Furthermore, the documents bear Mr. Vance’s verified hand-signed signature and digital thumbprint."
Judge Vance reviewed the documents under her desktop magnifier. "These carry the official seal of the Secretary of State. Mr. Sterling, was your client aware of these filings?"
Julian’s attorney stumbled over his words. "Your Honor... our client believed those filings were... preliminary drafts—"
"They are final, binding tax deeds," Claire interrupted, her voice ringing across the silent courtroom like a bell. "Which means Julian Vance’s current lawsuit is not a legitimate property dispute. It is a calculated, illegal attempt to crash Hale Aerospace's stock so that his shell company, Vance Global, could execute a hostile takeover!"
Suddenly, Ethan’s laptop pinged softly. He looked at his screen, his eyes widening. He quietly leaned forward and tapped Agent Ruiz on the shoulder, handing him a printed paper sheet.
Ruiz stood up immediately, walking down the aisle to present the paper to Claire.
Claire reviewed the printout, turning to face Julian Vance directly. "And Your Honor, we have just received real-time network logs verified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. While this court was in session, servers registered to Vance Global in Dublin attempted to execute a malicious cyber-attack on Hale Aerospace's emergency drone network in Sector Nine—endangering the lives of over three hundred trapped storm survivors."
Gasps erupted throughout the courtroom. Reporters began scribbling furiously on their note pads.

Julian slammed his hands down on the table, standing up in defiance. "This is an outrage! Those servers were hacked by third parties!"
"Sit down, Mr. Vance!" Judge Vance thundered, striking her gavel three times. "If you take one more step without permission, I will hold you in summary contempt of court!"
