Chapter 11 - The Trial of the DeadSeven months passed.

Sophie turned five.
Olivia moved into a small house nearby.
Ethan did not ask her to move back in.
Their marriage had survived death.
It had survived betrayal.
But survival was not the same as healing.
They attended therapy separately.
Then together.
Sophie slowly learned that doors could remain unlocked.
She stopped hiding food beneath her pillow.
She still checked her milk.
She still woke from nightmares.
But she laughed again.
That mattered.
The criminal trial began.
Richard.
Adrian.
Judge Cole.
Claire.
Vanessa.
Each had a different story.
Each claimed to be less guilty than the others.
Dr. Keller testified for four days.
He described Saint Catherine's.
The fake medical records.
The medication.
The forged death certificate.
The private payments.
Then Claire testified.
She admitted editing Ethan's voice.
She admitted drugging Sophie.
She admitted helping Adrian.
Finally, Vanessa took the stand.
The courtroom became silent.
The woman who had once controlled every room now sat under oath.
The prosecutor asked:
“Did you know Olivia was alive?”
“Yes.”
“Did you visit her?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell her Ethan wanted her confined?”
“Yes.”
“Did you lock Sophie in a pantry?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vanessa looked at Olivia.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“Losing everything.”
The prosecutor asked:
“Did you love Ethan?”
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Yes.”
“Then why did you hurt his daughter?”
Vanessa looked toward Sophie.
“Because I wanted her to love me.”
Sophie shook her head.
May you like
“You don't hurt people so they love you.”
For the first time, Vanessa had no answer.
