Inside, Ethan sat beside Olivia.
Sophie colored pictures with Rosa.
Finally, the verdict came.
Richard was guilty.
Adrian was guilty.
Judge Cole was guilty.
Claire was guilty.
Vanessa was guilty.
The courtroom seemed to exhale.
Richard received decades in federal prison.
Adrian's sentence was nearly as severe.
Judge Cole permanently lost the authority she had abused.
Claire received a reduced sentence for cooperation.
Eleanor pleaded guilty to impersonation and obstruction.
Vanessa faced sentencing separately.
Her son, Julian, was born healthy.
DNA confirmed Adrian was the father.
Vanessa asked Ethan to take custody.
He refused.
Not because Julian was guilty.
Because a child's future should never be built from someone else's guilt.
A screened foster family offered him a safe home.
At Vanessa's sentencing, Beth read Sophie’s statement.
“I do not want Vanessa near me.
But I do not want her baby to be sad.”
Vanessa sobbed.
The judge sentenced her to prison.
No contact with Sophie unless Sophie requested it as an adult.
As officers led Vanessa away, she stopped.
“Ethan.”
He looked at her.
“Was any of it real?”
He thought of their wedding.
The mornings.
The laughter.
Then he remembered Sophie in the pantry.
“Maybe some of your feelings were real.”
He paused.
“But your choices were real too.”
