Chapter 19 - The PhotographYears later, the old photograph remained in a drawer.

Olivia at twenty-three.
Before the crash.
Before Saint Catherine's.
Before Vanessa.
Before everything broke.
Sophie found it one rainy afternoon.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Were you happy here?”
Olivia looked at the photograph.
“I was.”
“Were you scared?”
“Not then.”
Sophie sat beside her.
“Do you wish you could go back?”
Olivia smiled sadly.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because if I went back, I wouldn't have you exactly as you are now.”
Sophie hugged her.
Ethan watched from the doorway.
The family had learned not to romanticize survival.
They knew scars remained.
Olivia still woke sometimes from nightmares.
Ethan still checked locked doors twice.
Sophie still hated certain perfumes.
But none of them pretended healing meant forgetting.
Healing meant remembering without being destroyed.
That evening, Sophie asked them to take a photograph.
The three of them stood beneath the magnolia tree.
Sophie held a strawberry candy.
Olivia laughed.
Ethan smiled.
The camera clicked.
For once, nobody looked like they were trying to prove anything.
May you like
They were simply there.
Together.
