Chapter 8 - The VaultPolice reached Olivia's apartment.

She was gone.

The bathroom window was shattered.

A bloodstain marked the sink.

The intruder had been searching for something.

A key.

Celeste finally revealed the truth.

There was a second key.

It opened a safe-deposit box at Bennett Coastal Credit Union.

Olivia's box.

Police found the branch near the harbor empty.

Then they saw movement.

A man dragged Olivia through the lobby.

Lucas Grant.

The driver who had caused the crash.

He demanded the silver key.

Ethan carried it.

Lucas wanted the safe-deposit box opened.

Inside were birth records, trust documents, and a digital recorder.

The recorder contained a conversation between Richard and Judge Miriam Cole.

They had discussed the stolen pension funds.

They had discussed Olivia.

Judge Cole had said:

“Then make sure she cannot testify.”

The corruption reached the courthouse.

Lucas was about to shoot when the lights went out.

Police stormed the vault.

The gun discharged into the ceiling.

Lucas was arrested.

Before being taken away, he looked at Olivia.

“Vanessa didn't know Richard wanted you dead.”

Olivia stared.

“What?”

“She thought the crash would scare you.”

Then he added:

“She called an ambulance.”

The truth was becoming uglier.

Vanessa had saved Olivia from the water.

Then helped imprison her.

Love and cruelty had existed inside the same person.

Judge Cole was arrested before dawn.

Olivia was finally allowed to return home under supervision.

Sophie ran into her arms.

“Mommy!”

Then she reached for Ethan.

“Daddy too.”

For the first time, they stood together.

Not healed.

But together.

That night, Olivia and Ethan spoke quietly.

“I loved Vanessa,” Ethan admitted.

“I know.”

“I thought she saved me.”

“She planned for you to need saving.”

“I should have looked deeper.”

“Yes.”

He accepted it.

Then Olivia whispered:

“Promise me tomorrow.”

“I promise.”

It was the smallest promise he had ever made.

And the most important.

The next morning, Sophie drew a picture of their house.

Three people stood outside.

A fourth person watched from an upstairs window.

“Aunt Claire,” Sophie said.

Then she pointed to Vanessa.

“She has a baby.”

Ethan's phone rang.

May you like

Vanessa was pregnant.

And she wanted to talk.
