Instead, she created a foundation for people wrongfully confined in private institutions.
Her first statement was simple:
“Money helped build my cage. I want mine to open doors.”
Sophie began therapy.
She learned that adults could make mistakes.
She learned that fear did not mean danger was present.
She learned that she could say no.
One afternoon, Ethan found her sitting beneath the magnolia tree.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Are you still rich?”
He laughed.
“Not like before.”
“Are you sad?”
“No.”
“Why?”
He sat beside her.
“Because I have you.”
Sophie thought about that.
“Mommy too?”
Ethan looked toward the house.
Olivia was standing on the porch.
“Yes.”
Sophie smiled.
“Then you're richer.”
Ethan nodded.
