Chapter 1 - THE GIRL AT THE RAILING

Chapter 1 - THE GIRL AT THE RAILING
The first scream was almost swallowed by the music.
Almost.

Hundreds of crystal pendants glittered beneath the enormous chandelier in Julian Mercer's home, scattering warm light across white marble and champagne glasses. A string quartet played beside the eastern windows. Men who controlled companies worth billions discussed markets beneath arrangements of white roses. Women in couture gowns smiled for photographers near the staircase.

It was exactly the kind of evening Julian Mercer understood.

Elegant.

Controlled.

Perfect.

Then a child screamed.

“Daddy!”

Julian stopped in the middle of a conversation.

Everything inside him recognized that voice before his mind did.

Evie.

He turned toward the staircase.

Another cry came from above.

“Daddy!”

This one broke.

Julian looked up.

And the world he had spent thirty-eight years learning to control disappeared.

Vivienne stood on the upper mezzanine.

She looked breathtaking.

Her burgundy satin gown caught the chandelier light like dark wine. Diamonds glittered at her throat. Her long brown hair fell in polished waves over one shoulder, and her makeup remained flawless.

But Julian barely saw any of it.

He saw the tiny girl beside her.

Evie.

His three-year-old daughter was barefoot.

Her pale pink nightdress was twisted around one knee. Her brown curls were tangled. Tears covered her round cheeks, and her little nose had turned red from crying.

Vivienne had one arm around her.

Too tightly.

For one terrible second, nobody understood what they were seeing.

Then Julian saw Vivienne's face.

Not panic.

Not concern.

Fury.

“Vivienne,” he said.

The quartet stopped playing.

“Bring her to me.”

Vivienne smiled.

It was the saddest smile Julian had ever seen.

“You always choose her.”

The room went completely still.

Someone lowered a champagne glass.

A woman near the dining room covered her mouth.

A fork slipped from someone's fingers and struck a porcelain plate with a tiny metallic ring.

Julian took one step toward the staircase.

“Give me my daughter.”

Vivienne's arm tightened around Evie.

The little girl whimpered.

“Daddy…”

Julian's heart slammed against his ribs.

Evie saw him.

Both of her tiny hands immediately reached toward him.

“Daddy… I'm scared.”

Something changed inside Julian Mercer.

For years, newspapers had described him as unemotional. Competitors called him impossible to intimidate. Investors trusted him precisely because he never appeared frightened.

But there was no billionaire standing beneath that staircase anymore.

There was only a father.

And his little girl was afraid.

Julian moved.

Fast.

“Vivienne! Put her down. Now!”

Vivienne backed away.

One step.

Then another.

Closer to the railing.

Julian began running.

Guests scattered as he reached the staircase.

“Vivienne!”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You promised me a life,” she said.

“I don't care about any of that right now. Give me Evie.”

“You don't understand.”

“Then make me understand tomorrow.”

Julian climbed faster.

“But right now, give me my child.”

Evie stretched farther toward him.

“Daddy!”

Julian was nearly there.

Vivienne looked down at the little girl.

Something terrible passed across her beautiful face.

Jealousy.

Grief.

Rage.

And beneath all of it, a desperation so deep that Julian finally understood something he should have understood months ago.

Vivienne did not see Evie as a child anymore.

She saw her as the reason she had lost.

Everything.

“You always choose her,” Vivienne whispered again.

“Yes.”

Julian didn't hesitate.

“She is my daughter.”

Vivienne flinched as though he had struck her.

Julian reached the top stair.

“Give her to me.”

Vivienne backed toward the railing.

Evie began sobbing harder.

“Daddy, please!”

Julian held out both hands.

“Look at me, sweetheart.”

Evie's enormous gray eyes found his.

“I'm right here.”

Vivienne looked from the child to Julian.

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered:

“Not anymore.”

Her body moved.

Evie lost her balance toward the balcony side.

“DADDY!”

Julian lunged.
