Chapter 3 - THE FALL THAT NEVER CAMEJulian lunged forward.

For one impossible second, time seemed to fracture.
Evie's tiny body tipped toward the railing, her pink nightdress catching in Vivienne's trembling hand. The chandelier above them blurred into streaks of gold. Someone screamed from below.
Julian reached.
His fingers closed around Evie's wrist.
Then he pulled with everything he had.
Evie slammed against his chest.
Julian staggered backward, nearly falling himself, but he twisted his body so the child was protected beneath his arm. Her little fingers clawed desperately into his tuxedo.
“Daddy!”
“I've got you.”
His voice broke.
“I've got you, sweetheart.”
Vivienne stood frozen beside the railing.
Her face had gone white.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Julian looked at her.
The warmth disappeared from his eyes.
“What were you thinking?”
Vivienne's lips trembled.
“I didn't mean—”
“You almost killed her.”
“No.”
“You almost killed my daughter.”
“I would never hurt Evie.”
Julian stared at her.
“Then why was she on that railing?”
Vivienne opened her mouth.
Nothing came.
Below them, the guests were whispering.
Someone had already called security.
Julian lifted Evie into his arms and carried her downstairs.
She buried her face against his neck.
“Don't let her take me.”
Julian stopped.
Those words hit harder than anything Vivienne had done.
He looked down.
“Who?”
Evie pointed over his shoulder.
“Her.”
Julian's jaw tightened.
By the time he reached the foyer, security officers were rushing toward them. Julian handed Evie to his head of security, Marcus Reed, then turned back toward the staircase.
Vivienne was being escorted downstairs.
She wasn't fighting.
She simply looked broken.
“Julian,” she whispered.
He said nothing.
“I love you.”
He looked at her for a long moment.
Then he answered quietly.
“Whatever this marriage was, it ends tonight.”
Vivienne's eyes widened.
“You can't.”
“I can.”
“You promised me.”
“I promised you a future.”
Julian looked toward Evie.
“But you threatened mine.”
The police arrived twelve minutes later.
And while officers questioned witnesses, Julian stood beside a window overlooking the dark gardens.
His hands were still shaking.
He had spent his entire adult life believing fear was weakness.
Tonight, he finally understood.
Fear was what remained after love had given you something to lose.
Behind him, Marcus approached.
“Sir.”
Julian turned.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“There is something else.”
“What?”
“One of the security cameras wasn't recording.”
Julian stared at him.
“Which one?”
“The camera covering the mezzanine.”
Silence.
Julian's eyes narrowed.
“Accident?”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
He handed Julian a tablet.
“The system was manually disabled fourteen minutes before the incident.”
Julian looked at the frozen screen.
Someone had planned for there to be no footage.
His blood turned cold.
This had not been an accident.
And suddenly, Vivienne's terrified face no longer looked like the face of the only person involved.
There was someone else.
Someone who had wanted the truth hidden.
May you like
Someone who knew exactly where Julian's daughter would be standing.
And somewhere inside that enormous house, someone was still watching.
