Chapter 7 - THE EMPIRE BUILT ON A LIEJulian returned to New York with Elena.

He did not bring her directly to Mercer House.

Instead, he took her to a private property outside the city.

He needed time.

He needed answers.

Most importantly, he needed Evie protected.

When Evie saw Elena for the first time, she stopped in the doorway.

Elena dropped to her knees.

She began crying.

Evie stared.

“Do I know you?”

Elena's voice trembled.

“No, sweetheart.”

She smiled through tears.

“But I know you.”

Evie walked closer.

“Why?”

“Because I've loved you since before you were born.”

Julian watched his daughter reach toward the woman.

Elena opened her arms.

Evie hesitated.

Then embraced her.

Julian turned away.

For the first time in three years, his daughter had a mother.

And Julian realized how much of her life had been built around an absence he had never understood.

That night, Elena told him the truth about Elliot Mercer.

His father had secretly built an offshore financial network designed to manipulate acquisitions, political influence, and hostile takeovers.

Richard Vale had managed it.

When Elliot wanted to dismantle the operation, Vale refused.

Elliot had threatened to expose him.

Six weeks later, Elliot died.

Officially, a heart attack.

Unofficially?

Poison.

Julian stared at Elena.

“You're saying my father was murdered?”

“Yes.”

“And you knew?”

“I suspected.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“For yourself?”

“For Evie.”

Julian looked toward the hallway.

His daughter was sleeping upstairs.

Elena continued.

“Vale believed Evie could become a legal obstacle to his plans. Elliot left shares to her in a trust.”

Julian's eyes widened.

“How much?”

“Enough to control Mercer Global.”

Silence.

Suddenly everything made sense.

The marriage.

Vivienne.

The surveillance.

The attempted accident.

Evie was not merely Julian's daughter.

She was the key to controlling the Mercer empire.

But there was something Elena still hadn't told him.

Julian noticed.

“What aren't you saying?”

Elena looked away.

“Your father left another message.”

“Where?”

“With me.”

She handed him a small envelope.

Julian opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A younger Julian.

Standing beside his father.

And behind them was Richard Vale.

On the back, Elliot had written:

IF JULIAN EVER HAS A DAUGHTER, KEEP HER AWAY FROM VALE.

Julian's blood ran cold.

He suddenly understood.

His father had known this day would come.

He had predicted Evie's existence.

Which meant there had been someone else involved in her birth.

Someone who had known the child would inherit the trust.

Julian looked at Elena.

“Why did you disappear?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because someone tried to kill me.”

“Who?”

“I never saw his face.”

“But you heard him.”

Elena nodded.

“What did he say?”

She whispered:

“He said, 'Tell Mercer the child belongs to us.'”

Julian's expression hardened.

“No one owns my daughter.”

But outside the house, across the dark road, a black SUV sat with its headlights off.

Inside, Richard Vale watched through binoculars.

And beside him sat Vivienne.
