Chapter 18 - THE HOUSE WE BUILTSix months passed.

Mercer Global survived.

But Julian changed it.

He sold most of the empire.

The money went into foundations, hospitals, education, and victim support.

The remaining company became smaller.

Cleaner.

Human.

Julian no longer worked eighteen-hour days.

He attended school events.

He cooked terrible pancakes.

He learned how to braid Evie's hair.

He learned that bedtime stories mattered more than board meetings.

Elena moved into the house.

At first, Evie called her Mommy only when she was sleepy.

Then one morning, she ran downstairs shouting:

“Mommy!”

Elena cried.

Julian laughed.

The house became warm.

Alive.

Not perfect.

But real.

Vivienne accepted a plea agreement.

She testified against Vale.

She received a reduced sentence because of her cooperation.

Before leaving, she asked to see Evie.

Julian allowed it.

Vivienne knelt.

“I don't expect you to forgive me.”

Evie hugged her.

Vivienne froze.

Then cried.

“Why?”

Evie answered:

“Daddy said people can make bad choices and still choose better ones.”

Vivienne closed her eyes.

“Your daddy is right.”

Then she left.

Julian watched her go.

He did not know whether he could ever forgive her completely.

Maybe forgiveness was not forgetting.

Maybe it was refusing to let the past control the future.

One evening, Julian and Evie sat on the porch.

The sunset turned the sky gold.

Evie leaned against him.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Are we rich?”

Julian smiled.

“Yes.”

“How rich?”

He thought.

“Rich enough.”

She frowned.

“That doesn't sound like a number.”

Julian laughed.

“No.”

“What makes people rich?”

Julian looked at her.

“Having someone to come home to.”

Evie smiled.

Then she whispered:

“We're very rich.”

Julian kissed her forehead.

May you like

He believed the nightmare was finally over.

He was wrong.
