Chapter 2 - The Man Behind the Concrete

The ambulance doors slammed shut with Sarah inside.
David stood frozen beneath the flashing red lights, his hands still covered in plaster dust and blood. For twelve years, he had believed he understood every corner of his life—the house, his marriage, his children, his company.
Now he understood nothing.
Officer Reynolds stepped beside him.
“David.”
David barely heard him.
“My wife just told me the man who sealed her inside that wall works for my company.”
“I heard her.”
“Who?”
Reynolds hesitated.
David turned sharply.
“Who?”
“We’re going to find out.”
“No.” David’s voice hardened. “You don’t understand. If someone inside my company helped Eleanor, this isn’t just about my family. Someone has been watching me.”
Reynolds looked toward the ambulance.
“Then we start with everyone who had access to the house.”
David climbed into his SUV before Reynolds could stop him.
But Leo grabbed the door.
“Dad.”
David looked at his son.
Leo’s face was streaked with tears, but his eyes had changed. The terrified boy who had spent months hiding behind locked doors was disappearing.
“I know who the man is.”
David stopped breathing.
“What?”
Leo swallowed.
“He came here before.”
“Who?”
“I don't know his name. Eleanor called him Mr. Voss.”
David felt something cold settle inside his chest.
Voss.
The name was familiar.
Not from the house.
From the boardroom.
Martin Voss was the senior construction director at David’s company. He had worked there for sixteen years. He had supervised dozens of major projects. He had been one of David’s most trusted employees.
And three months earlier, Voss had personally recommended that the hallway walls be “reinforced” while David was overseas.
David slowly looked back at the house.
The broken wall stood like an open wound.
Someone had built a prison inside his home.
Someone had known exactly how to hide it.
And someone had known David would be gone.
“Leo,” he said quietly, “did you ever see him with your mother?”
The boy nodded.
“Once.”
“When?”
“The night before Mom disappeared.”
David’s stomach twisted.
“What did he do?”
Leo looked toward the ambulance.
“He gave Eleanor a key.”
At St. Vincent Medical Center, Sarah was rushed into emergency treatment.
The doctors found severe dehydration, malnutrition, multiple untreated injuries, and evidence that she had been restrained for an extended period.
David stood outside the emergency room while doctors fought to stabilize her.
Lily slept against his chest.
Leo sat beside him, staring at the floor.
For the first time in months, the children were safe.
But David couldn't feel relief.
He could only hear Sarah's words.
He works for your company.
A detective approached.
“Mr. Mercer?”
David looked up.
“I’m Detective Alvarez.”
“Is she going to live?”
“We don't know yet.”
David nodded.
Then Alvarez lowered his voice.
“We searched the house.”
“And?”
“We found something.”
The detective placed a clear evidence bag on the chair.
Inside was a small black key.
David stared at it.
“What is that?”
“It was hidden behind a loose brick near the sealed wall.”
David looked closer.
Stamped into the metal were two characters:
V-17.
His blood ran cold.
“That’s not a house key.”
“No.”
“What is it?”
Alvarez looked directly at him.
“It’s a storage key.”
David frowned.
“To what?”
“We're still tracing it.”
Then Alvarez's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“Where?”
A pause.
“Don't touch anything. I'm on my way.”
He hung up.
“What happened?” David asked.
Alvarez looked at him.
“We found the concrete mixer.”
David frowned.
“What concrete mixer?”
“The one used to seal the wall.”
“And?”
“It was abandoned in one of your company’s warehouses.”
David felt the floor shift beneath him.
May you like
Alvarez continued.
“There’s blood on it.”
