Chapter 8 - The BoardroomBy noon, David had called an emergency meeting of Mercer Construction's board.

Every executive arrived.
Every face looked familiar.
Every smile seemed false.
Martin Voss's chair was empty.
David stood at the head of the table.
“My family was attacked.”
Silence.
“Someone inside this company helped imprison my wife.”
Several directors shifted uneasily.
David activated the projector.
Bank transfers appeared.
Forgery records.
Photographs.
Then the photograph of Sarah and Martin.
The room erupted.
“Where did you get that?”
David looked toward the voice.
Richard Kane.
Chief Financial Officer.
“You recognize it.”
Kane's face went pale.
“No.”
David clicked again.
A second image appeared.
Kane standing beside Eleanor.
The room fell silent.
“You lied to me,” David said.
Kane stood.
“This is ridiculous.”
David smiled coldly.
“Sit down.”
Kane hesitated.
Then the doors opened.
Detective Alvarez entered.
“Richard Kane, you're under arrest.”
Kane ran.
Officers tackled him before he reached the elevator.
David watched.
One traitor down.
But the flash drive contained twenty-seven names.
Not one.
Twenty-seven.
He turned toward the board.
“Who else?”
No one spoke.
Then the projector suddenly went black.
A message appeared.
YOU HAVE 31 HOURS LEFT.
David stared at the screen.
A second line appeared.
ASK SARAH ABOUT THE CHILD.
David's heart stopped.
“What child?”
No one answered.
His phone rang.
It was Sarah.
“David?”
“Sarah, what child?”
Silence.
Then she whispered:
May you like
“Our daughter.”
David's world disappeared.
