Chapter 6 - The Betrayal“Put the gun down.”
Martin smiled.
“You always were brave, David.”
David kept his hands visible.
“You killed my father.”
“No.”
“You kidnapped Sarah.”
“No.”
“You helped Eleanor imprison her.”
Martin's smile disappeared.
“Eleanor acted alone.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because you're about to destroy something much bigger than yourself.”
David glanced at the files.
“Project Echo.”
Martin's eyes hardened.
“You shouldn't have opened that.”
“What is it?”
“A mistake.”
“My father called Sarah a protected asset.”
Martin stepped closer.
“She was the only person who knew where the money went.”
“What money?”
Martin laughed bitterly.
“Your father's empire wasn't built on construction.”
David stared.
“It was built on political contracts, offshore accounts, bribery, and stolen land.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Your father was a criminal.”
David shook his head.
“You're lying.”
“Am I?”
Martin pointed toward the files.
“Read them.”
David did.
The evidence was overwhelming.
His father's company had been involved in illegal deals across several states.
But there was something stranger.
The documents showed that Sarah had discovered the operation.
She had planned to expose it.
Then David's father intervened.
He didn't kill her.
He hid her.
Because Sarah possessed evidence that could destroy everyone.
Including David.
“You knew she was alive.”
Martin nodded.
“For twelve years.”
“Why didn't you kill her?”
“Because I needed her.”
“For what?”
Martin's eyes shifted toward the door.
“Where is Eleanor?”
David stared.
“What?”
Martin's voice dropped.
“She was supposed to be here.”
A distant siren sounded.
Martin cursed.
“You called the police.”
“No.”
Martin looked toward the basement window.
Red lights appeared outside.
David realized something.
Martin wasn't afraid of the police.
He was afraid of someone else.
A shadow moved beyond the glass.
Martin's face went pale.
“Who is that?”
David whispered.
Martin looked at him.
“My father.”

Then the lights went out.
A gunshot exploded through the darkness.
