Chapter 4 - Sarah's SecretAt 3:17 a.m., Sarah opened her eyes.

David was beside her hospital bed.

He had not slept.

The room was dark except for the monitor beside her.

Sarah looked at him.

“You're still here.”

“I'm not going anywhere.”

Her lips trembled.

“I thought you were dead.”

David reached for her hand.

“I thought you were dead.”

Tears filled her eyes.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then David asked the question he had been terrified to ask.

“Sarah, who is Martin Voss?”

Her expression changed.

It was subtle.

But David saw it.

Fear.

“You know him.”

Sarah looked toward the window.

“Yes.”

“How?”

She closed her eyes.

“Before you.”

David felt something crack inside him.

“How long?”

“Years.”

“Did you love him?”

“No.”

“Did he love you?”

Sarah hesitated.

“I don't know.”

David stood.

“Sarah, I need the truth.”

She gripped the blanket.

“Martin was working on a construction project my father owned.”

David stared.

“Your father?”

“My father died believing his company collapsed because of bad investments.”

“What does that have to do with Voss?”

“Everything.”

Sarah's breathing became shallow.

“My father discovered money was disappearing.”

“From his company?”

“Yes.”

“He suspected Voss.”

Sarah nodded.

“Martin was stealing from him.”

David's jaw tightened.

“And you knew?”

“I found the records.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Martin threatened me.”

David stared.

“What did he threaten?”

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

“You.”

A long silence followed.

“He told me if I exposed him, you would die.”

David looked away.

“And after that?”

“I disappeared.”

“Eleanor?”

Sarah nodded.

“She found me.”

David's expression hardened.

“How?”

“I don't know.”

Sarah looked directly into his eyes.

“But she told me something that night.”

“What?”

“She said you had chosen her.”

David shook his head.

“I never chose Eleanor.”

“She said you had signed papers giving her control of everything.”

“I never signed anything.”

Sarah stared at him.

“Then someone forged your signature.”

David suddenly remembered the warehouse.

The transfers.

The false documents.

His entire life had been built around a lie.

Then Sarah whispered:

“There's something else.”

“What?”

“The night I was taken, I wasn't the only person watching.”

David leaned closer.

“Who else?”

Sarah's eyes widened.

“I saw your father.”

David froze.

“My father has been dead for fifteen years.”

Sarah nodded slowly.

“I know.”

The heart monitor began to beep faster.

“He wasn't supposed to be alive,” she whispered.
