Chapter 15 - The Door That Was Never LockedSix months later, the Mercer family lived in a smaller house.

The old mansion had been demolished.

Mercer Construction had survived.

The corrupt executives were facing trial.

Eleanor was awaiting sentencing.

Martin Voss had survived and agreed to testify.

Jonathan had disappeared again.

But this time, David understood why.

Some ghosts needed distance before they could become fathers again.

Sarah was recovering.

Slowly.

Some nights she woke screaming.

Some mornings she couldn't enter a room without checking the walls.

But she was alive.

Leo had returned to school.

Lily laughed again.

And Emma slept with her bedroom door open.

One evening, David stood in the backyard watching his children chase fireflies.

Sarah joined him.

“You're thinking too loudly.”

He smiled.

“I was thinking about how close we came to losing everything.”

Sarah slipped her hand into his.

“But we didn't.”

David looked at Emma.

“No.”

“We found each other.”

He kissed her forehead.

Inside the house, the children laughed.

For a moment, everything was peaceful.

Then Emma appeared at the back door.

“Daddy?”

David turned.

“What is it?”

She held something in her hand.

A small envelope.

“Someone left this for you.”

David frowned.

“Who?”

Emma shook her head.

“I don't know.”

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Jonathan Mercer.

Standing beside Martin Voss.

But the photograph was recent.

Taken three days earlier.

On the back were six words:

THE WALL WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

David's smile disappeared.

Sarah read the message.

Neither spoke.

Then David looked toward the dark tree line beyond the backyard.

Something moved.

A shadow.

Gone almost instantly.

Sarah squeezed his hand.

“David…”

He stared into the darkness.

“I know.”

Behind them, Emma called:

“Daddy?”

David turned.

The little girl smiled.

For now, his family was safe.

For now, they were together.

And for now, that was enough.

But somewhere beyond the Mercer property, an engine started.

Headlights appeared briefly between the trees.

Then vanished.

David stood perfectly still.

The past had not finished with him.

Neither had the people who built the first wall.

May you like

And somewhere in the darkness, someone was already planning the second.

THE END… FOR NOW.
