Chapter 10 - The House on Blackwater RoadThe bracelet led them to an abandoned property outside the city.

Blackwater Road.
David, Alvarez, and two officers approached after midnight.
The house was dark.
Inside, they found children's drawings.
Dozens.
Pictures of a family.
A mother.
A father.
Two children.
And sometimes a woman with no face.
On one drawing, written in red crayon:
THE BAD LADY SAYS DADDY DOESN'T WANT ME.
David's hands trembled.
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
“Police!”
Silence.
Then a little girl's voice.
“Daddy?”
David froze.
He ran upstairs.
A bedroom door opened.
A six-year-old girl stood there.
Green eyes.
Dark hair.
Holding a stuffed rabbit.
David dropped to his knees.
“Emma?”
She stared at him.
“You came.”
David began to cry.
Emma ran into his arms.
For the first time in years, the Mercer family was almost whole.
Then Emma whispered:
“Daddy, we have to leave.”
“Why?”
“Because Grandpa said the bad people are coming.”
David looked toward the hallway.
“Which grandpa?”
May you like
Emma pointed behind him.
“Your dad.”
