Flames raced along the curtains.
Smoke filled the rooms.
David carried Lily while Leo held Emma.
“Back door!”
Alvarez shouted.
They ran.
A beam collapsed behind them.
Jonathan remained inside.
“Dad!”
David turned.
Jonathan was trapped beneath fallen timber.
“Go!”
David ignored him.
He ran back.
Together, he and Alvarez lifted the beam.
Jonathan crawled free.
They escaped seconds before the roof collapsed.
Outside, Eleanor disappeared into the darkness.
David watched the burning house.
“She wanted us scared.”
Alvarez nodded.
“She wanted something else.”
“What?”
A firefighter approached.
“We found a body.”
David froze.
“Whose?”
The firefighter looked uncomfortable.
“We don't know yet.”
Then another officer ran toward them.
“Detective!”
He handed Alvarez an evidence bag.
Inside was a necklace.
Sarah's necklace.
David stared.
“But Sarah is at the hospital.”
